Physiology
Hippopotas is a quadruped, hippo-like Pokémon that is most commonly found in deserts and other arid places. Its skin color depends on gender: if male, it is tan with dark brown patches, and if female, its coloring is reversed. It has a large snout with round, protruding nostrils. Its eyes and small ears protrude from the top of its head. Its torso has mottled coloring and a small hole on its back. Each of its feet has two blunt claws, and it has a small tail. Hippopotas spends its time bathing in sand and avoids water at all costs. It covers itself in sand as a protective measure against germs and expels sand instead of sweat. When it walks through the sand, it shuts its nostrils. It prefers to travel in groups of ten.
Hippopotas are relatively small earth-colored creatures that are most commonly found in arid places. They spends their time bathing in sand and avoid water at all costs. The Hippo Pokémon also have large mouths with big teeth. One of their more interesting features is that they can shoot jets of sand from ports on their bodies and presumably from their large nostrils. This makes their habit somewhat similar yet completely different from their real world counterpart.

Gender differences
In the anime
Female Hippopotas are dark brown with tan highlights, while the male's colors are reversed.

Major appearances
Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime
Hippopotas appeared in Mass Hip-Po-Sis! and Sleight of Sand!. In both episodes, Ash and ashfr had to help him reunite with its herd of Hippowdon and fellow Hippopotas after it was accidentally separated from them.

Special abilities
Other
Hippopotas can Sand Tomb. Although the amount is unknown, it could be unlimited. Hippopotas also have a powerful set of jaws for using Bite and Crunch. For some odd reason, this Pokémon is capable of learning Water Pulse and Iron Tail, despite its short, stubby tail.
Multiple Hippopotas appeared in Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, where one of them was borrowed by Ash and his friends for its Ground attacks. It played a crucial role in restoring the broken Prison Bottle during the climactic battle in Dahara City. This Hippopotas was later returned to his herd, and Bonnie bid it farewell.

Like most other Ground Pokémon, Hippopotas can cause earthquakes and attack with several Rock-based attacks.
Minor appearances
A Hippopotas made a brief cameo appearance in Giratina and the Sky Warrior.
