Heatran (Japanese: ヒードラン Heatran) is a dual-type Fire/Steel legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Heatran is a tortoise-like creature (also based off of a ram) with a reddish-brown body that has orange and gray spots. Heatran has metal bangles locked on its legs and the four claws on each of its feet are in a cross formation. Heatran has a gray underside, its face is covered by an iron mask and it has red-orange eyes. Whenever it is seen with its mouth open, an orange glow eminates from inside it. Because of its intense body heat, certain parts of its body are melted slightly out of shape.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Heatran can use its cross-shaped claws to dig deep into walls. Their feet allow them to stick to a surface, allowing it to hang and climb from walls or ceilings. Boiling blood, like magma, circulates through its body.

Heatran mainly attacks by using Template:Type2 attacks such as Flamethrower and Fire Fang, but it also knows a couple of Template:Type2 moves like Iron Head and Flash Cannon. Heatran can use some Rock and Template:Type2 attacks, such as AncientPower, Stone Edge, Earth Power and Earthquake.

Heatran is the only known Pokémon that learns Magma Storm.

Behavior

File:Heatran anime.png

Heatran made its anime debut in DP169. It was being followed by Natsuya, who was on a mission to capture it and protect it from a collapsing mountain.

Another Heatran appeared in DP182, making it the first Legendary Pokémon to be entered by a trainer in a formal competition.

In the manga

Heatran appears in the Movie 12 manga adaption. It is one of the Pokémon under Marcus's control, along with Bronzong. Marcus uses Heatran to attempt to kill Arceus, Damos, Ash and his friends.

Another Heatran appears in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!. When Charon raids Stark Mountain, he disturbs the Magma Rock and awakens Heatran, leaving Hareta to battle it.

Trivia

Origin

Heatran is most likely based on volcanic remains. Its Steel-typing references how the Earth's inner core is made of solid metal under immense pressure. It may also be based on a turtle, as the Pokemon Platinum Version Dex entry states that it is melted in parts because of its own heat and in the artwork, bits of metal, which may possibly be a melted shell, can be seen on its body.

Name origin

Its name comes from the words heat and possibly transfer. The "-tran" may also come from transition metal, referring to its status as a Template:Type2 (note that steel itself is not a transition metal, but an alloy of one). The "doran" in its Japanese name can also be read as "dran", so it may be a combination of "heat" and "dragon".
