The haircut brothers (Japanese: さんぱつきょうだい Haircut brothers) are characters in Pokémon Gold and Silver and their remakes, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, occasionally appearing in the Goldenrod Tunnel in Goldenrod City, Johto.

As the name suggests, the brothers give a single Pokémon a haircut that increases the Happiness of the Pokémon, once per day. Using the services of the brothers is useful for evolving Pokémon that require a certain amount of Happiness to evolve, such as Togepi or Eevee. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the service not only raises a Pokémon's Happiness, but also raises its Beauty stat, which is necessary to evolve Feebas into Milotic, due to the absence of Contests in the games.

The younger of the Haircut brothers is cheaper at $300, but his service is often less satisfactory. However, the younger brother has a chance of occasionally increasing a Pokémon's Happiness to a greater degree than the older brother is capable. The older brother is more reliable but more expensive at $500.

In the games

Happiness level

The brothers will raise a Pokémon's Happiness by one of three random levels:

  • "Pokémon looks a little happier"
+1 for all happiness values
  • "Pokémon looks happy!"
+3 for happiness values 0-199, +1 for values 200-249
  • Pokémon looks delighted!"
For younger brother, +10 for values 0-199, +4 for values 200-249
For older brother, +5 for values 0-199, +2 for values 200-249

Appearances

The brothers never work at the same time. The brother that is on shift depends on the day of the week. On Mondays, neither brother is available for haircuts.

In the anime

The brothers made a minor appearance in A Goldenrod Opportunity, when Ash and Whitney accidentally ended up at their shop in Goldenrod City. They offered to give the trainers' Pikachu and Clefairy a new look but the two declined.
