Trivia

  • Golbat, its evolution, and its pre-evolution are the only Pokémon to have three x¼ resistances.
  • The only time Golbat's tongue is shown is in Red and Blue sprites. It also appears in its 3D form in games like Pokémon Stadium.
  • Golbat is the first Pokémon in the National Pokédex listing to gain a new evolution in a later generation.
  • To date, every villainous team in the main series of games have had at least one of their members use Golbat and/or one its evolutionary family.
  • Zubat and Golbat have been in all regional Pokédexes.
  • Golbat and Chansey are the only Pokémon that evolve by happiness that are already evolved. Before Generation IV, Golbat was the only one.
  • Until Generation IV, both Golbat and Zubat could not learn Fly.
  • Golbat is capable of learning Brave Bird despite not actually being based on a bird.
  • Pokémon Platinum is the only game in which both of Golbat's wings are pointing down in its sprite.
  • Unlike Zubat's wings, the outside of Golbat's wings looks almost the same as the inside. However, in its Pokémon Yellow sprite, they resemble Zubat's wings instead, even though the backsprite does not reflect this.

Origin

Golbat is likely based on a vampire bat.

Name origin

Golbat's name is derived from the words gold and bat. It might be a shortening of golden-capped fruit bat, the largest bat species in existence. However, it may also be derived from the words ghoul and bat.
