Giratina (Pokémon): Difference between revisions

Giratina may be based on the biblical figure of the {{wp|fallen angel}}, celestial beings that rebelled against God and were excommunicated to Hell. This is analogous to Giratina, due to being a Pokémon created by {{p|Arceus}} (Pokémon World's God) and excommunicated to another dimension due to its belligerent nature. Nonetheless, it might have drawn inspiration by {{wp|Samael}}, who is the ruler of the 5th Heaven and has grim and destructive duties whilst being member of a heavenly host; both traits allude to Giratina being the ruler of another dimension ([[Reverse World]]) and its threatening visage. These sources, along with its role, may also suggest Giratina being inspired by {{wp|Satan}} - a fallen angel who, once banished to Hell, would then rule over the domain. Furthermore, both of Giratina's Forms resemble the {{wp|The Beast (Revelation)|Beasts of Revelation}}, with its Altered Form standing for the "Earth Beast", and its Origin Form standing for the "Sea Beast".  They also respectively resemble a {{wp|basilisk}} and a {{wp|serpent}}, two creatures that the Devil would often take the form of in the {{wp|Bible}}. In addition, Giratina's Altered Forme has six legs, six ribs, and six spikes on the wings, while its Origin Forme has six wings, six ribs, and six spikes on its body. In religious context, 666 is stated to be the number of the Devil.

In its Altered Forme, aside from the resemblance to a basilisk, Giratina's wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a {{wp|sauropod}}. Its Origin Forme, while also bearing a similar appearance to a serpent, also features six protrusions on its body, which may be based on a {{wp|scorpion}}'s stinger or {{wp|spider}} legs. This Forme also shares physical traits with the {{wp|Amphiptere}}, a {{wp|European dragon}}-like creature with wings but no legs. Its wings might also be based on {{wp|Seraph}} who are celestial beings of higher order that is symbolized by their six wings.

Giratina may also be based on Seta, a giant centipede, from the Japanese fairy-tale, "{{wp|My Lord Bag of Rice}}", which was said to prey on dragon hatchlings and be as large as a mountain.
