This card was included in the {{TCG|Base Set}} as a {{TCG|Trainer card}} with artwork by [[Keiji Kinebuchi]], first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Expansion Pack}}. In Japan, it was reprinted with a reworded effect in the {{TCG|Nivi City Gym}} {{TCG|Theme Deck|deck}} and was subsequently included in the {{TCG|Tamamushi City Gym}} deck, in both decks of the {{TCG|Quick Starter Gift Set}}, and the {{TCG|Yamabuki City Gym}} deck. Outside Japan, it was reprinted in {{TCG|Base Set 2}} and the {{TCG|Legendary Collection}} retaining its original effect text. The Original Series print was also featured in the {{vg|Pokémon Trading Card Game}} and [[Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR!]] for [[Game Boy Color]].

Energy Retrieval was reclassified as an {{TCG|Item card}} in the {{TCG|Black & White}} expansion and featured new artwork by [[Kent Kanetsuna]], previously released in the Japanese {{TCG|Beginning Set}}, {{TCG|Beginning Set for Girls}}, and {{TCG|Black Collection}}. In Japan, it was reprinted in the {{TCG|Beginning Set +}}, the {{TCG|Beginning Set Pikachu Version}}, and the {{TCG|Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck}}. Outside Japan, it was reprinted in the {{TCG|Black & White Trainer Kit}} and the {{TCG|Plasma Blast}} expansion.

===XY Series===
This card was reprinted with new artwork by [[5ban Graphics]] as one of the Japanese {{TCG|XY-P Promotional cards}} and was available in the {{TCGMerch|XY|Era|Xerneas & Yveltal Card Box}} from December 13, 2013. This print was later available outside Japan in the {{TCG|Primal Clash}} expansion. The Japanese {{TCG|Bandit Ring}} expansion included a {{TCG|Secret card|Secret}} print of Energy Retrieval, which was later printed in the {{TCG|Ancient Origins}} expansion. The original XY-P Promotional print was made available in a number of subsequent Japanese products, including the {{TCGMerch|XY|Era|Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre Card Box}}, the {{TCG|Emboar-EX vs Togekiss-EX Deck Kit}}, and the {{TCGMerch|XY BREAK|Era|Mega Mewtwo X & Mega Mewtwo Y Card Box}}. It was reprinted again in the Japanese {{TCG|BREAK Starter Pack}}. It was reprinted as a {{TCG|retro card}} in the {{TCG|Evolutions}} expansion, first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary}} subset, featuring the same artwork as the Base Set print and an updated card template reminiscent of the Original Series layout.

===Sun & Moon Series===
Energy Retrieval was reprinted again during the Sun & Moon Series as part of the {{TCG|Sun & Moon}} expansion, first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Collection Moon}} and {{TCG|Sun & Moon Starter Set}} simultaneously on December 9, 2016. This print features new artwork by [[5ban Graphics]]. It was later included in the Ash Half Deck of the Japanese {{TCG|Ash vs Team Rocket Deck Kit}}. It was reprinted in the {{TCG|Shining Legends}} expansion and the Japanese subset of the same name, as well as in the Japanese {{TCG|Remix Bout}} subset.

===Sword & Shield Series===
During the Sword & Shield Series, Energy Retrieval was reprinted with new artwork by [[Ryo Ueda]]. It was included in the {{TCG|Sword & Shield}} expansion, first released in the Japanese {{TCG|V Starter Sets|V Starter Set Lightning}}. In Japan, it was reprinted as a Non Holofoil in the {{TCG|Sword & Shield Premium Trainer Box}}, as a Holofoil in the {{TCG|Inteleon VMAX High-Class Deck}}, and as both a Mirror Holofoil and a Non Holofoil in the {{TCG|Start Deck 100}}. Outside Asia, it was reprinted in the special {{TCG|Crown Zenith}} expansion.

===Scarlet & Violet Series===
