Elemental monkeys

Revision as of 19:26, 26 February 2011 by TheChrisD (talk | contribs) (Undo revision 1372922 by J-J-M (talk) No, trust me, the article needs them.)

Elemental monkeys is a fan term that specifically refers to Pansage, Pansear, Panpour, and their respective evolutions Yanakkie, Baokkie, and Hiyakkie. The name is derived from the fact all of the Pokémon are based on monkeys with a different elemental type (Grass, Fire, and Water respectfully) and are closely related in terms of stats, moves, and appearance. This term should not be confused with other Pokémon based on monkeys like Chimchar, Aipom, Mankey etc.

Pansage is the first of the elemental monkeys in National Pokédex order and the Template:Type2 of the group. It evolves into Yanakkie when exposed to the Leaf Stone. Pansage made its first appearance alongside Axew on toys dating back to July 2010, making it the first of the monkeys ever seen by fans.

Yanakkie is a primate-like Pokémon that is primarily green in coloration. It has a pointed, bush-like crest on its head similar to a Pompadour and broad ears to the sides of it. It has little fluff on its shoulders and a thorny tail. Pansage is based on "Speak no Evil" from the three wise monkeys motif.

As a Grass-type, Pansage and Yanakkie are capable of learning various Grass-type moves such as Seed Bomb, Leech Seed, and even Grass Knot, and are capable of having the Overgrow ability via Pokémon Dream World. Pansage's leaves are known to cure exhaustion and Yanakkie attacks with its thorny tail if angered.

Pansage can be obtained in Pokémon Black and White either as a gift Pokémon at the Site of Dreams if the player chose Tepig as his or her starter, or via shaking grass in Pinwheel Forest or Lost Forest. If the player picked Oshawott as his/her starter, then the player will face against Cilan with a Pansage in the first gym.

Panpour is the last of the elemental monkeys in National Pokédex order and the Water-type of the group. It evolves into Hiyakkie when exposed to the Water Stone.

Panpour is a blue monkey Pokémon with tan coloring on its face and lower body, its hair on its head is shaped like a fountain or mushroom cloud and its tail has a club-like shape at the end. Hiyakkie is a primate-like Pokémon that is primarily blue in coloration. It has crests on its head similar to dreadlocks and broad ears to the sides of it. Hiyakkie also have a cream-colored face, chest, hands, arms, legs, and feet. Panpour is based on "See no Evil" from the three wise monkeys motif.

As a Water-type, Panpour and Hiyakkie are capable of learning various Water-type moves such as Scald and Surf plus some Template:Type2 moves like Ice Beam and are capable of having the Torrent ability via Pokémon Dream World. Panpour gathers water, stores it into its hair, and then dampens its body using its tail. The water stored in the tuft on its head is full of nutrition and plants watered with it will grow well. Hiyakkie can use the stored water in its tail ether as backup when water supply is low or use it as a powerful weapon strong enough to destroy concrete.

Panpour can be obtained in Pokémon Black and White either as a gift Pokémon at the Site of Dreams if the player chose Snivy as his or her starter, or via shaking grass in Pinwheel Forest or Lost Forest. If the player picked Tepig as his/her starter, then the player will face against Cress with a Panpour in the first gym.

Cilan and Pansage

Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour made their debut in Triple Leaders, Team Threats! under the ownership of Gym Leaders Cilan, Chili, and Cress respectively. Chili and his Pansear were the first that fought against Ash. However, even though it was fairly skilled at using its moves, it got swung around by its tail and eventually lost to Ash's Tepig.

The next fight was Cress's Panpour vs. Ash's Pikachu. Panpour was at a clear disadvantage due to its typing but still won the battle by not giving a chance for Pikachu to attack.

Cilan's Pansage

Main article: Cilan's Pansage

Cilan's Pansage was the last of the Pokémon of the leader trio faced by Ash at the Gym, with Ash choosing to use Oshawott. Pansage was a formidable opponent, overwhelming and intimidating Oshawott with powerful Bullet Seed and Bite attacks and with skillful agility that dodged Oshawott's attacks. As a finisher, Pansage used SolarBeam on Oshawott, but Oshawott reflected it with its shell and the battle continued. The battle ended when Oshawott won against Pansage after defeating it with Razor Shell.

After the battle, Cilan remarks on Ash's skills and decides to travel with him and Iris. Since then, Cilan often uses Pansage for assisting himself and his friends.

In manga

Monta's Panpour

In the Pocket Monsters BW manga

In Pocket Monsters BW, Cilan, Chili and Cress appear in PMBW03, each using their signature elemental monkey. When Isamu Akai's Clefairy tries to instigate a fight between the brothers, their monkeys attack in a group against Clefairy, but this backfires when Clefairy uses their combined powers to make green tea.

In the Pokémon Master Black & White manga

Monta has a Panpour and Cheren has a Pansage. They used them during a triple battle in PBW02.

In the TCG

Pansage, Pansear, and Panpour along with their respective evolutions are recurring Pokémon in the Trading Card Game.

Trivia

  • The elemental monkeys are the only non-starter Pokémon able to possess the Overgrow, Blaze, and Torrent abilities.
  • The stats of all three elemental monkeys are identical, as are the stats of their evolved forms.
    • Their cries are also the same: the difference are the effects applied to them. The same is true to their evolved forms.
  • Pansage, Pansear and Panpour are the only Pokémon capable of learning all moves that involve the use of held items by level-up.
