Trivia

The prototype name for Dragonair was "Dragyn," a play on the word "dragon."

  • Dragonair is the only Pokémon who shrinks when it evolves

Origin

It appears to be based on sea serpents or lóng, traditional Chinese dragons who bring good luck.

Name origin

Dragonair's name appears to be a combination of dragon and air, referring to its ability to change the weather, or "lair", the home of a dragon. It may also be a play on the word debonair. Hakuryū could be taken to mean 白竜, white dragon. Hakuryu was also the name of the dragonlike companion of Hakai from the legend of the journey to the west in Buddhist lore.
