Dive (Japanese: ダイビング Diving) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation III as HM08. It lost this status in Generation IV, but regained it in Generation V as HM06.

Effect

In battle

Generation III

On the first turn, the user will dive down for one turn to become invulnerable to any attack with the exception of Surf and Whirlpool, which have doubled power. The user may also be hit underwater if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader, then struck the following turn. Sandstorm, Hail, and Shadow Sky will not cause damage during the semi-invulnerable turn.

Dive's base power is 60.

Generation IV

Dive's base power was raised to 80. All other effects are the same.

Due to the lack of diving areas in Sinnoh, Johto and Kanto, this move has been relieved of its HM status.

Generation V

Dive has returned to HM status, this time as HM06.

Outside of battle

Dive in the games

Allows players to go underwater in specific spots when they are Surfing. The only regions in which these spots (and the HM itself) have been found so far are Hoenn and Unova.

Trivia

  • Since Dive has only been used in the anime when there have been convenient lakes or pools of water, it is unknown how the Pokémon can dive underwater when there is no water around.
  • Unlike Whirlpool and Defog, which can be freely known by a Pokémon sent forward to Generation V when the Pokémon is transferred from a game they are not an HM in, a Pokémon with Dive will be prevented from being migrated to Generation IV even in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, where Dive is neither usable, required, nor legitimately available to the player without trading.
    • Because of this, few Pokémon learn it in Diamond and Pearl; therefore, Dive can only be obtained by leveling up certain Pokémon. This changed in Platinum with the inclusion of a move tutor capable of teaching the move to certain Pokémon, including all who could have it in Generation III.
  • Although the HM itself is not obtainable in FireRed and LeafGreen, cheating can make the HM accessible. In addition, it functions normally, being able to actually teach the move Dive.
    • Lorelei's Cloyster knows this move, although the only way to have a Cloyster with Dive would be to use the HM.
  • Dive is the second former HM move to regain HM status at a later generation, after Whirlpool.
    • Dive is also the second HM move to be learned through two separate HMs: HM08 in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, and HM06 in Black and White.
