Dewgong (Japanese: ジュゴン Jugon) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Seel starting at level 34.

Biology
Physiology
Dewgong is a pinniped Pokémon with a snowy white, furry body. Its fur renders it virtually invisible in snowy conditions. Its face has two black eyes, a black nose, and two tusks extending from its upper jaw. It has a streamlined body with two front flippers and a long flowing tail. Even in extremely cold and ice-packed waters, its tail allows it to be a swift and agile swimmer at speeds of 8 Knot (unit). On top of its head is a sharp horn, which allows it to cut through the thickest ice floes.
Dewgong is the sea lion pokemon. Its body is extremely streamlined, allowing it to swim up to 8 knots. Its fins are larger, stronger, and more fish-like and its tail also more fish-like and developed than Seel. Its long tail is able to change swimming direction quickly when needed. It is covered in pure white coat of fur that obscures it from view of predators, when in the snow. It also has a layer of Thick Fat, that allows it to store thermal energy and protects it from intensely cold water and air. Dewgong also has a small black nose, and fangs or small tusks protruding out of its upper jaw.Its long , beautiful tail makes it look extremely graceful.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
It lives on icebergs adrift in List of Pokémon by habitat. It thrives in lower temperatures, becoming increasingly more active the colder the weather. By storing thermal energy within its body, it is completely unharmed by even the most intense freezing weather. During daylight hours, it sleeps on bitterly cold ice or under shallow water. However, at night when the temperature drops, it becomes a hunter and searches for prey such as Wishiwashi. Following a meal, it sunbathes on the beach. This raises its body temperature and aids in digestion.
Dewgong's pure white fur allows it to camouflage with the snow. They are capable of turning with surprising precession. Dewgong are capable of learning many Ice- and Water moves. Dewgong is one of the very few Pokémon capable of having the Hydration ability.

Behavior
Evolution
Dewgong are very active in bitterly cold temperatures. At night, Dewgong go out hunting for food, after sleeping most of the day. It loves to sleep under shallow ocean waters or on ice floes.
Dewgong evolves from Seel.

Habitat
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Lorelei uses a Dewgong in Pokémon Adventures. It first appeared in Do wrong, Dewgong!, In which it combined it's Ice Beam attack with Cloyster's Spike Cannon attack to try and bury Yellow and Bill alive. It is capable of using Ice Beam to create paths of solid ice on which it moves, similar to Iceman (comics).

In Volume 4 of The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Rudy's sister is seen drowning with a Dewgong instead of a Seel like in the anime.

Trivia
Trivia
* "Manaty" was the original English name for Dewgong.
* In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Dewgong was originally known as "Manaty".
* Dewgong is the first Ice Pokémon in National Pokédex order.
* Dewgong shares its category with Seel and Popplio. They are all known as the Sea Lion Pokémon.
* Dewgong and Spheal's evolution line are the only Pokémon to have a "triple resistance", thanks to the Thick Fat ability.

Origin
Origin
Dewgong is based on the aquatic dwelling tropical mammal, the dugong. Its is of the same Sirenia as the manatee, which resides in the Western Hemisphere. The four Evolution of sirenians of the order all currently inhabit warm waters, a source of conflict with Dewgong's Ice affinity. However, an extinct closer evolutionary relative from the same family (Dugongidae), the Steller's Sea Cow, once existed in the cold Arctic waters of the Bering Sea. While it is suggested that Dewgong was partially inspired by other water dwelling aquatic polar mammals; seals, sea lions, the Harp Seal, the Hooded Seal, the ringed seal, et al.; the Evolution of sirenians#Fossil history suggests the prominence of enlarged incisors that are absent in the modern variants of the dugong, a feature that is noticeable in Dewgong.
Dewgong may be based on earless seals, particularly harp seal pups due to its white fur and icy habitat. Its body is similar to mermaids. It also shares characteristics with various aquatic mammals that live in the Arctic Ocean. Its long, white body is similar to a beluga whale, its horn may be inspired by a narwhal, and its tusks may be inspired by a walrus.

Name origin
Name origin
Dewgong's name is a portmanteau of dew and dugong, as well as a corruption of the dugong; a relative of the manatee. Jugon is also a corruption of dugong. The Dew may refer to the natural phenomenon of water vapor condensing in the presence of a cold surface. Dew formation at sufficiently low temperatures turns into frost; a perfect symbol of Dewgong's dual type affinity.
Dewgong may be a combination of dew and dugong.

Jugon may be derived from 儒艮 jugon (dugong).
