Corphish (Japanese: ヘイガニ Heigani) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Crawdaunt starting at level 30.

Biology

Physiology

Corphish are crustacean Pokémon with a red shell, however the joints to its limbs and the underside to its body and pincers are cream in coloration. They possess four pairs of limbs in total: two pincers and three pairs of legs used for walking about. Their eyes are saucer-like, with small pupils, and it has a crest of three spikes on its head. Its tail is fairly short and lobster-like.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Corphish has the ability to live in polluted water, where it will quickly reproduce. Its powerful pincers allow it to use the moves ViceGrip and Crunch, and ultimately, the one-hit-knockout move Guillotine.

Behavior

Corphish try to compensate for their small size by being stronger than any other Pokémon on their territory. If a new Pokémon enters its territory, the resident Corphish will immediately challenge it to battle.

Habitat

Corphish can live in any body of water that can support them.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Corphish are willing to eat anything that is edible.

In the anime

Corphish in the anime

Corphish first appeared in Which Wurmple's Which?. Ash caught in on his fishing line and then it attacked him and his friends.

Another Corphish appeared in Gone Corphishin'. Ash battled and captured this Ruffian Pokémon at the end of the episode. Ash's Corphish serves as the main comedic relief member of Ash's team and the only Pokémon that Ash captured in Hoenn that hasn't evolved, save for his Torkoal (which doesn't have an evolved form).

Corphish appeared in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness. He was one of the two Pokémon (the other being Chatot) who kicked Team Razor Wind out of their guild.

A Corphish also appeared in Cheers on Castaways Isle!.

A Corphish also appeared in Bagged Then Tagged!.

Trivia

  • Corphish is the only Pokémon to date with a catch rate of 205.
  • Corphish can be found in the Hoenn region, but it says in its Pokédex entries that it came from another region overseas. This would make it the first exotic species in the Pokémon world.
  • Corphish only has eight limbs, including claws, whereas both crayfish and lobsters have ten limbs.

Origin

Based on the Pokémon Ruby Pokédex entry, Corphish is probably based on the Red Swamp Crayfish. Native to North America, this species was introduced in Japan as food for bullfrogs. Today, these crayfish are popular pets in Japan.[1]

Name origin

Corphish's name is possibly a pun on crayfish, the species it is based on, and corps (pr. "core"), a branch of military servicemen, or corporal, a member of the military or police force.

Alternatively, it could be a homonymic play on the arcane Newfoundland fishing term corfish, which are a kind of dried fish.

Heigani is based on "hei" 弊 meaning bad habit or to harm, or "hei" 兵 means army, troops and "ebigani" , meaning crayfish.

In other languages

  • German: Krebscorps
  • French: Ecrapince - From écrase (crush) and pince (pincer). May contain a corruption of écrevisse (crayfish).
  • Korean: 가재군 Gajaegun
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 龍蝦小兵 Lóng Xiā Xiǎo Bīng - From 龍蝦 (lobster) and 小兵 (small/young soldier). 龍蝦 can also be derived from 小龍蝦 Xiǎolóngxiā (crayfish).
