Clefairy (Japanese: ピッピ Pippi) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Cleffa when leveled up with high happiness and into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Clefairy appears to be a pink creature. It has stocky limbs and a round body which gives it a chubby appearance. It also possess large sensitive ears that have brown tips. It has small wings that seem incapable of flight, but allow it to bounce gracefully.

None.

Special abilities

The most well-known ability that a Clefairy has is the ability to use Metronome, a move that involves wiggling its fingers back and forth in order to execute any move at random. Even without Metronome, Clefairy is capable of learning a vast amount of elemental attacks. They can also store moonlight in their wings, allowing them to float in midair. It is also one of only three Pokémon that can learn Meteor Mash.

Prior to Generation V, Clefairy and its evolution family were the only Pokémon that could possess the Magic Guard ability, which prevents all forms of indirect damage.

Behavior

Clefairy are very shy and timid creatures. As such, they rarely show themselves to humans. They are among the most intelligent of all Pokémon, being capable of forming society and religion. They are also capable of constructing various means of transport. Clefairy also seem to have gained a reputation as kleptomaniacs, since there have been various reports of Clefairy being seen stealing random junk.

Clefairy are extraterrestrial Pokémon, and as such are elusive Pokémon in the wild. The best place to find them is Mt. Moon, especially at a night during a full moon. Wherever they live, they are likely to be in an area where the moon is clear and visible at night. They can also be found on Mt. Coronet in Sinnoh, and around Kyurem's crater in the Giant Chasm in Unova.

Diet

Clefairy's diet is unknown. Though the presence of a canine tooth may indicate that it is an omnivore.

Major appearances

Clefairy's debut appearance was in Clefairy and the Moon Stone.

A group of Clefairy were going around stealing random junk in Viridian City to repair their spaceship during Clefairy Tales. Their leader got beaten up by Jigglypuff for stealing its microphone/pen. These Clefairy made another brief appearance in Wish Upon a Star Shape.

Several Clefairy also appeared in A Real Cleffa-Hanger, when Ash and his friends visited Mt. Moon again.

Minor appearances

In A Goldenrod Opportunity, a Clefairy was used by Whitney to send Team Rocket flying and in the Gym Battle against Ash. The Fairy Pokémon was defeated by Ash's Cyndaquil.

In Lights, Camerupt, Action!, Isamu Akai, along with his Clefairy and Pikachu appeared in a film that Ash and his friends were watching.

Pokédex entries

Isamu Akai's Clefairy

There are two chapters in the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga which focus on Clefairy.

In the third chapter of the manga, Clefairy Tale, Ash discovers a colony of Clefairy with Bill and Professor Oak. The three humans assist with and witness an evolution ceremony. This chapter appears to be loosely based on the anime episode Clefairy and the Moon Stone.

The second chapter to feature Clefairy is Clefairy in Space, the tenth chapter of the manga. In this chapter, a herd of wild Clefairy are causing trouble in Apple City, where rumors are circulating that Clefairy come from outer space. This chapter was based on the anime episode Clefairy Tales. In this chapter, it is learned that Clefairy have a secretion from the back of their throat that can harden into a crystal-like form.

In Magical Pokémon Journey and Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪

One of Hazel's main traveling companions in the Magical Pokémon Journey manga is a timid, shy Clefairy. Clefairy tends to be very cowardly, but when he actually does battle, he can use his powerful Metronome attack.

Clefairy also returns as a main character in Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Green had a Clefairy that later evolved into Clefable when Red used his Moon Stone on it. Although it was used only once for distraction against Sabrina prior to evolving, its increased power allowed it to stall Zapmolcuno for a short period of time with its Metronome.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

Clefairy is one of the main characters in the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga and is Isamu Akai's starter Pokémon. Clefairy is often very rude and stupid, gaining him the nickname "Blockhead Clefairy". He is the source of much slapstick humor in the manga.

Clefairy also uses Metronome but uses its own series of attacks such as Blizzard, Explosion, or Fire Spin. All will hurt any opponents close to Clefairy.

Trophy information

Clefairy are very cute Pokémon, which makes them popular pets. However, as they're only found in a few areas, it takes a lot of work to find one. Strangely enough, legend has it that Clefairy are more active during the full moon. These Pokémon are known to use Metronome, a move that unleashes a randomly selected technique.

• Pokémon Stadium: Clefairy stars in the mini-game "Clefairy Says." Players are given a pattern of arrows to repeat back. Each time the player messes up, they will receive a strike. After five strikes, the player is out. The last Clefairy standing wins.
• D/P/Pt: In Veilstone City's Slot Machines, the bonus rounds function with a Clefairy which points to which reel to stop first.

Trivia

• The prototype name for Clefairy was "Aria."
• The Glitch Pokémon 3TrainerPoké and 'M will both evolve into a Clefairy at level 128, a level unattainable by legitimate and unglitched Pokémon. These Clefairy can then evolve into Clefable via Moon Stone, making them some of the few Glitch Pokémon to undergo two evolutions. Both of these Pokémon can also optionally evolve into Kangaskhan instead of Clefairy if they manage to revert to Level 1. If they evolve into Kangaskhan, none of the two can evolve further.
  • The Glitch Pokémon LM4 also evolves into Clefairy at level 18, and can then evolve into Nidoking immediately afterwards.
• Clefairy is the first Pokémon not to have a base happiness of 70. Its base happiness is 140.
• Clefairy and Clefable share the same species name with Snubbull and Granbull. They are all known as the Fairy Pokémon.
• Clefairy was originally going to be the official mascot of Pokémon, but Pikachu was used instead due to the popularity of the anime and Pikachu's familiarity with fans.
  • In the original pilot episode of the anime, Clefairy was intended to be Ash's starting Pokémon. Due to a last minute change, the role went to Pikachu. This would have made the anime closer to the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga, which would later be referenced in Lights, Camerupt, Action!, where its main character, Isamu Akai, along with his Clefairy and Pikachu appeared in a film that Ash and his friends were watching.
• Despite what its Pokédex entries may insinuate, Clefairy does not have the ability Levitate.
  • Despite it possessing the required anatomy, Clefairy is not part Flying-type, nor can it learn a single move that involves its wings.
