Brock (Japanese: タケシ Takeshi) is the Gym Leader of the Pewter City Gym. He hands out the Boulder Badge to trainers who defeat him. He specializes in Rock-type Pokémon.

His Japanese name can be taken to mean "strength" (武), and his English name literally means "badger" but was selected because it sounds like the word "rock".

In the Anime

In the anime, Brock is a Pokémon Breeder who is currently travelling with Ash, May, and Max through the Hoenn region. His Japanese seiyu is うえだ ゆうじ Yūji Ueda, and his English voice actor is Eric Stuart. He originally trained Rock-type Pokémon, but has, since the beginning of the anime, diversified. He makes scrumptious Pokémon food, and he hits on every pretty girl he meets, particularly Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy- both of whom he sings about in the Pokémon Karaokémon song "Two Perfect Girls". He also sings the ending theme タケシのパラダイス Takeshi No Paradaisu ("Brock's Paradise").

He is a domestic, taking care of the tasks of not only grooming his Pokémon, but also those of the kids with whom he travels. He handles the cooking and the cleaning, something he is quite used to, being the oldest of ten children.

His family life deserves another mention, owing to it being most peculiar. His father, Flint, left home to become a great trainer. When he never returned, his mother, Mizuho, up and left them, leaving Brock to take care of his siblings by himself (the English version of Showdown in Pewter City has Flint claming she died, although he was clearly lying). It turned out Flint considered himself a failure and was selling rocks at the edge of town. When Brock left to journey with Ash, he left Flint in charge of the Pewter Gym.

Upon his return after journeying through Johto, Brock was dismayed to find that his mother had returned and commandeered the gym, turning the Rock-type haven into a Water-type den. Brock battled her for the honor of Rock-types and won, promising his brother Jiro that he would become Gym Leader someday.

In the Games

Brock's title is The Rock-Solid Pokémon Trainer. Brock is quite proud of his rock-hard willpower, and uses Rock-type Pokémon to complement this.

Brock is one of the few truly serious professional Pokémon trainers in the Pewter City area. He's tough, people respect him, and most admire him.

Supposedly, it's hard to get him to laugh or drop his serious demeanor, but when he does, he can't stop.

Brock likes to dig for fossils in Mt. Moon, which is possibly how he ended up getting a Kabutops and Omastar in Generation II.

In addition to the Boulder Badge, Brock gives out TM 34, Bide, in Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Green, and Pokémon Yellow. In Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, he gives out TM 39, Rock Tomb.

In Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, he doesn't give out a TM.
