Braviary (Japanese: ウォーグル Warrgle) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

He evolves from Rufflet starting at level 54.

Biology

Physiology

Braviary is an eagle-like Pokémon. His face and underside are a navy blue, while his back and the dorsal side of his wings are dark red. He has a bright blue cere above his yellow beak, from which extends a red, three-pointed crest. White plumes sprout from each point of the crest, and similar feathers are present on the sides of Braviary's face. Along with the feathery "mane" on the back of his head and neck, these features resemble a Native American war bonnet. Braviary's legs are feathered down to its feet, ending in spiky feathers on the upper portions of Braviary's large yellow talons. These powerful claws are tipped with black nails. His tail feathers are mainly red, with a blue tip and a yellow subterminal band.

Gender differences

Braviary is a male-only species. Mandibuzz is regarded as a female counterpart, but is a separate species that cannot produce Rufflet Eggs.

Special abilities

Braviary, like most other bird-like Pokémon, learn a multitude of wind-based moves, as well as many aerial attacks. They are uncommonly strong, and can easily fly while gripping an automobile in its talons. They are agile and graceful in flight.

Behavior

Heedless of danger, Braviary fight fearlessly and relentlessly. They are very courageous, as evidenced by their species name of "Valiant Pokémon". They also seem to have a strong flock dynamic, fighting without pause to protect their friends and family. It is said that the more wounds they have, the more respect they get from their comrades.

Habitat

Braviary live in rugged, mountainous habitat and around gorges. They are also found in areas by water and in wilderness areas like deserts.

Trivia

Origin

Braviary is based on an eagle, specifically the Bald Eagle. Some of his physical characteristics, such as the fully-feathered legs and the light-colored "crown" on his nape, are reminiscent of a Golden Eagle. He also has feathers on his head that resemble a war bonnet. Some species of eagle, such as the Philippine Eagle, possess a similar crest. His color scheme and basis suggest he is inspired by the Star-Spangled Banner, the flag of the United States of America, which is red, white, and blue and the national symbol of which is the Bald Eagle. He also resembles a Native American warrior.

According to interviews with Ken Sugimori in Nintendo Dream, Rufflet and Braviary were added early into the development of Black and White.

Name origin

Braviary is a corruption of bravery and a combination of brave and aviary. "Home of the brave" is a lyric found in the "The Star-Spangled Banner", the national anthem of the United States. Brave may also refer to the term used for Native American warriors, as in some native tribes, the eagle is a sacred animal.

Warrgle is a combination of war or warrior and eagle. It may also involve warble, a sound a bird makes.
