Before leaving for his {{pkmn|journey}}, Barry had always participated in the [[Twinleaf Festival]]s, in one of which he sang a duet with {{an|Dawn}}.

Eventually, Barry became a [[Pokémon Trainer]] and he was able to capture soon a {{p|Heracross}} and, with a lot of effort, Barry to pass three [[Gym]]s, managing to beat [[Byron]] and [[Gardenia]], the latter being won in a hard battle of his {{TP|Barry|Empoleon}} against a powerful {{TP|James|Cacnea}} that made him need to teach Empoleon the move {{m|Hydro Cannon}} to have a chance to win the battle.

One day, during the [[Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition]], Barry was quite in awe of [[Paul]]'s performance at the event.

Barry debuted in ''[[DP101|Barry's Busting Out All Over!]]'', where he intended to challenge [[Fantina]] for a [[Gym]] {{pkmn|battle}}, but he instead met {{Ash}} at the door of the [[Hearthome Gym]]. He challenged Ash to a battle to prove his {{pkmn|training}} methods wrong, but Ash came out as the victor. Afterwards, Barry stayed to watch Ash challenge Fantina in ''[[DP102|A Shield with a Twist!]]''. At times, he was skeptical about Ash's strategy in the battle, but by the end of the fight, he realized that his techniques were excellent. He later stated that he would be his [[rival]] if Ash could defeat [[Byron]], whom Barry had previously beaten.

In ''[[DP122|Stopped in the Name of Love!]]'', Barry announced his plans of entering the upcoming [[Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament]] and invited the group to join the competition. Later, when [[Dawn's Piplup]] fled the [[Pokémon Center]], he helped to search for him. It was also revealed in this episode that he is good friends with {{an|Dawn}}'s rival, {{si|Kenny}}. He reappeared in ''[[DP123|Old Rivals, New Tricks!]]'', in which he watched Dawn and Kenny participate in the {{to|Sandalstraw}} {{pkmn|Contest}} and shared with Ash and {{an|Brock}} that it was his first time watching a Pokémon Contest live.

In ''[[DP124|To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!]]'', Barry entered the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament with {{TP|Barry|Empoleon}} as his partner Pokémon. He made it to the quarterfinals, where he lost to famous {{wp|Table tennis|ping pong}} player [[O]].

In ''[[DP163|Fighting Ire with Fire!]]'', Barry revealed that he had acquired all the necessary Badges to compete in [[Sinnoh]]'s {{pkmn|League Conference}}. He met [[Paul]] for the first time and challenged him to a battle, but to his dismay, Paul refused and suggested he battle Ash instead. Barry initially said Ash was not at his level since Ash was still one Badge away from the [[Sinnoh League]], but later agreed to battle him. He chose his Empoleon to face off against [[Ash's Monferno]]. However, the battle was put on hold when {{TRT}} attacked.

In ''[[DP184|Casting a Paul on Barry!]]'', he battled Paul in the third round of the tournament, and even though he put up a strong battle, utilizing two new Pokémon on his team, {{p|Skarmory}} and {{p|Hitmonlee}}, along with his partner, Empoleon, he ended up falling before the superior strength and tactics of Paul and his team, not knocking out one of Paul's Pokémon in the process, though Paul commented afterwards that it had been a great battle. Barry then stayed and watched Ash's battles with Paul and {{si|Tobias}}, and he parted from the group in ''[[DP189|The Semi-Final Frontier!]]'', promising to be reunited with Ash and become as strong as him.

Much like {{ga|Barry|his game counterpart}}, Barry possesses a hyperactive personality that often goes well past impatience. To this end, whenever something or someone gets in his way, annoys him, or causes him any minor inconvenience, Barry will lose his temper and shout for the cause to be fined. This attitude is so recurring and extreme that his {{TP|Barry|Empoleon}} often shows exasperation at his {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s wild behavior.

Barry admires [[Paul]] and his {{pkmn|training}} methods, and wants to be a strong Trainer like him. He also has a slightly similar mentality as Paul's, such as preferring to {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} strong Pokémon for training. However, unlike Paul, he still cares for his Pokémon, praising them for their hard work and showing concern when one of them is injured, such as when Empoleon was afflicted by the sound-waves caused by [[Team Galactic]]'s actions while on [[Iron Island]].

|desc={{p|Staraptor}} was the first Pokémon to be used in the battle against {{Ash}}. It went up against his {{AP|Chimchar}} and was knocked out with a combination of {{m|Dig}} and {{m|Flamethrower}}.

Staraptor appeared again in ''[[DP110|Steeling Peace of Mind!]]'' where it took on [[Team Galactic]], only for it to get hit by {{p|Golbat}}'s {{m|Sludge Bomb}}.

|desc={{p|Roserade}} was the second Pokémon Barry used after {{p|Staraptor}} got knocked out in [[DP101|his first battle against Ash]]. It managed to defeat {{AP|Chimchar}} with a barrage of {{m|Poison Jab}}s as Chimchar was worn out from the battle with Staraptor. Roserade's next opponent was {{AP|Gliscor}}, it traded Poison Jabs with Gliscor's {{m|X-Scissor}}s, only for both of them to get defeated at the same time.

Roserade appeared again in ''[[DP110|Steeling Peace of Mind!]]'' where it battled [[Team Galactic]], only for it to be hit by {{p|Golbat}}'s {{m|Air Cutter}}.

|desc={{p|Heracross}} first appeared in ''[[DP110|Steeling Peace of Mind!]]'' on [[Iron Island]] alongside his {{pkmn|Trainer}}. He was training with {{TP|Barry|Empoleon}}, but the training got interrupted when Empoleon started attacking them as it was controlled by the sound waves coming from within the island. Later, he took Barry on a flight around Iron Island to see the cause of the {{type|Steel}} going haywire, including his Empoleon. Heracross was then hit by a Skarmory's {{m|Steel Wing}}, sending them falling onto Team Rocket. Heracross attacked Team Rocket as they were accused to be the ones behind all of this. However, after pointing out the machines located on the island, it turned out that another [[Team Galactic|villainous team]] was the cause. The Galactic's {{p|Golbat}} attacked them with {{m|Air Cutter}} and severely damaged Heracross.

Heracross reappeared in ''[[DP140|Historical Mystery Tour!]]'' battling [[Ash's Pikachu]]. Heracross was able to withstand Pikachu's attacks and became stronger from the last time. The battle got interrupted when a {{p|Xatu}} flew by. Xatu lead the group to a tent owned by a {{tc|Clown}} and they got sent to another world. When they woke up, they got separated and searched for their Pokémon. While Barry was looking for his Heracross, he found a tree. He had a flashback about the time he caught Heracross after slathering [[honey]] on a tree. He did the same thing this time and Heracross came up to Barry and the tree.

|desc={{p|Skarmory}} was the first Pokémon used at the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]] in his match against [[Paul]], going up against his {{TP|Paul|Magmortar}}. As its first move, Skarmory used {{m|Spikes}} on the field to damage Paul's Pokémon whenever they were sent out. Afterward, it was easily knocked out by {{p|Magmortar}}'s {{m|Flamethrower}}.

|desc={{p|Hitmonlee}} was the third Pokémon Barry used at the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]] in his match against [[Paul]] after [[recall]]ing {{TP|Barry|Empoleon}}, battling against {{TP|Paul|Ursaring}}. Both gave a good fight, whereas Hitmonlee showed good speed, agility, and strength. {{p|Ursaring}} managed to evade some attacks, but when it was hit by Hitmonlee's {{m|Blaze Kick}}, it was {{status|burn}}ed, and this activated its {{a|Guts}} [[Ability]], which greatly increased Ursaring's attack power, allowing it to defeat Hitmonlee with a powerful {{m|Hammer Arm}}.
