Collection Sheet Journey Partners

The BW era officially began in Japan on September 18, 2010 with the release of the Collection Sheet Journey Partners (Japanese: コレクションシート 旅立ちの仲間). This collection consists of three sets, each focusing on one of the Generation V starter Pokémon: Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott. Each set contains three cards, nine available to collect in total, with every type in the TCG at the time represented by a card.

Beginning Set

The first major release of the BW era was the Beginning Set (Japanese: はじめてセット), available from October 29, 2010. Much like the earlier Collection Sheet Journey Partners, the set features three half decks with particular emphasis of the Unova starter Pokémon Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott, while all collectively introduce a handful of new Generation V Pokémon. As an introductory product, the Beginning Set includes game essentials such as damage counters, a coin, and play mat, plus a number of play aids. These include a how-to-play booklet and DVD, plus three quick guides for each half deck detailing game flow and specific cards.

Beginning Set for Girls

Released simultaneously with the regular Beginning Set, the Beginning Set for Girls (Japanese: はじめてセット forガール) marks the first TCG product explicitly marketed at a specific gender, with differences in presentation and illustration style on the cards exclusive to the set. Aside from a number of these exclusive cards, the contents remain largely similar to those in the regular Beginning Set: three starter-oriented half decks, damage counters, one coin, one play mat, three quick guides, one how-to-play booklet, and one how-to-play DVD.

Beginning Set DX for Girls

The Beginning Set DX for Girls (Japanese: はじめてセットDX forガール), an enhanced version of the regular Beginning Set for Girls, was released at the same time as the Beginning Set DX. Much like its counterpart, a deck case, a set of 32 card sleeves, a sticker sheet, and a notebook were packaged in addition to the contents found in the regular version, all presented in a metal case. The Pokémon featured on the case are drawn in soft pastel shades as opposed to the brightly colored 3D models as featured on the Beginning Set DX case.
