In ''[[EP269|The Ties That Bind]]'', Ash recalled a day when he was about to start his [[Pokémon journey]]. He and [[Gary Oak]] both fished out a Poké Ball which snagged on both their lines. After arguing about who would keep it, they broke it in two, each keeping one half as a reminder of that day.

In ''[[SM044|A Dream Encounter!]]'', Ash was entrusted to take care of a {{p|Cosmog}} by {{p|Solgaleo}} and {{p|Lunala}}, which he saw in a dream. The Cosmog, nicknamed [[Nebby]], by Lillie, took a liking to Ash and frequently caused trouble with its ability to {{m|teleport}} people around. In ''[[SM047|A Masked Warning!]]'', Nebby teleported Ash to [[Ten Carat Hill]], where Ash encountered Gladion again. There, he learned that Lillie's fear of touching was caused by a {{p|Nihilego}} [[Faba]] accidentally summoned from an [[Ultra Wormhole]].

In ''[[SM061|A Mission of Ultra Urgency!]]'', Ash and his classmates were invited to their first mission as the [[Ultra Guardians]], their goal being to capture a {{p|Buzzwole}} that had appeared through an Ultra Wormhole. The Ultra Guardians encountered Buzzwole at [[Mahalo Trail]], where Ash started battling it with Pikachu. Throughout the battle, although Pikachu was able to land a Thunderbolt, Buzzwole constantly had the upper hand. However, when Kiawe tried to join the fight, it turned out that Buzzwole actually preferred flexing to battling, so Ash and Kiawe started flexing with it, requiring {{Rotom}} to remind Ash that he needed to throw a {{ball|Beast}} while the [[Ultra Beast]] was distracted. As such, Ash flung a Beast Ball at Buzzwole, successfully capturing it. Later, Buzzwole was brought to [[Melemele Meadow]], where [[Professor Burnet]] temporarily opened a new wormhole, allowing Buzzwole to return back home.

In ''[[SM087|Filling the Light with Darkness!]]'', mysterious dark clouds appeared over the Alola region, causing all of the adults in Alola to lose their energy and motivation. The next day, Ash and his classmates embarked on their fifth mission to investigate the situation at the [[Altar of the Sunne]]. Shortly after arriving, Lusamine revealed that Gladion would be joining them as a new member. In order to disperse the clouds, Ash, Kiawe, Lana, and Gladion combined their Z-Power to fuel a device that successfully made the clouds disappear, but they uncovered a hidden Ultra Wormhole in the process. Afterwards, Lusamine took the Ultra Guardians into the ruins, where she showed them a mural depicting the {{p|Necrozma|Blinding One}}. Before any attempt to translate the mural could be done, the Ultra Guardians were forced to return outside, where they found the wormhole increasing in size. At that moment, a {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Lunala}} emerged from the wormhole with a {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Necrozma}} chasing after it.

Though his passion remains in battling, Ash is always eager to try new things, especially if he can do them together with {{cat|Ash's Pokémon|his Pokémon}}, having participated in other events like [[Pokémon Contest]]s, [[PokéRinger]] tournaments, and even a [[Hearthome Collection|fashion show]] and a {{pkmn|Dress-Up Contest|cosplay convention}} as well as various other {{cat|Pokémon competitions}}. He has [[Contest Pass]]es for [[Sinnoh]] and [[Hoenn]]. Ash carries with him half of a broken [[Poké Ball]], while [[Gary Oak]] has the other half, as a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry; [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift; and half of the {{DL|Ribbon|Terracotta Medal}} he received after his [[Contest Battle]] with May in the unofficial {{to|Terracotta}} Contest ended in a tie.
