 Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness, rashness, and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, family, and supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without forcing it to [[Evolution|evolve]], as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''. He is happy when his Pokémon evolve but lets them choose whether or not they want to evolve instead of forcing them.
-Ash's closeness to his Pokémon family is so great that it goes to the point of him having an intense fear of having them leave him; as shown in ''[[AG089|A Scare to Remember!]]'' when he almost lost Pikachu, when he temporally had amnesia, and sided with Team Rocket, and in ''[[XY116|The Synchronizing Test!]]'' when he had a nightmare, after passing out during a battle with his close friend and rival [[Alain]], that {{AP|Greninja}} was leaving him. Although he fears losing his Pokémon family the most, Ash does also fear losing his close friends and loved ones. In the {{DL|List of XY series episodes|XYZ series}}, Ash's fear was his biggest weak point in trying to perfect the Ash-Greninja form, although he wasn't aware of it until close to the end of ''[[XY120|All Hail the Ice Battlefield!]]'' when Gym Leader [[Wulfric]] hinted him as to why he was having trouble in perfecting the form. Following his brutal loss to Wulfric, Ash fell into a state of depression upon realizing how far he'd let his fears get the better of him and for not doing something about the problem sooner, and even felt guilty for letting Greninja get hurt so badly during the battle. In ''[[XY121|the next episode]]'', Ash nearly lost himself in his depression and self-pity, although he was pulled out of it by {{an|Serena}} reminding him of who he is and him subsequently rediscovering his reason as to why he wanted to become a Pokémon Trainer. This enabled Ash to let go of his fear and synchronize his feelings with Greninja, allowing them to finally perfect the Ash-Greninja form. Also, Ash does worry for his Pokémon safety and would risk everything to keep them safe from danger, something that Team Flare's leader [[Lysandre]] used to his advantage by using Pikachu and his Kalos Pokémon (although Greninja was also part of Lysandre's plan) as hostages to assure that he would cooperate with him.

 Ash has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in various [[Pokémon League Conference]]s, but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time. He has also gained a close connection with many {{pkmn2|Legendary}} and [[Mythical Pokémon]], such as the ones who played major roles in the {{pkmn|movies}}. In the English dub [[M02|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world when it was disrupted.

 Although viewed as a normal [[human]], Ash does have some special abilities, as he is said to have the same [[Aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. Therefore, he made a connection with Sir Aaron's {{OBP|Lucario|M08}}. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient Aura guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in ''[[DP071|Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part 1]]'' and ''[[DP072|Part 2]]'', Ash uses Aura again to locate a lost {{p|Riolu}} and read Riolu's mind as well. This time, however, he merely senses the Aura, rather than manipulating it. Ash also has the unique ability to use [[Bond Phenomenon]].
 Though his passion remains in battling, Ash is always eager to try new things, especially if he can do them together with {{cat|Ash's Pokémon|his Pokémon}}, having participated in other events like [[Pokémon Contest]]s, [[PokéRinger]] tournaments, and even a [[Hearthome Collection|fashion show]] and a {{pkmn|Dress-Up Contest|cosplay convention}} as well as various other {{cat|Pokémon competitions}}. He has [[Contest Pass]]es for [[Sinnoh]] and [[Hoenn]]. Ash carries with him half of a broken [[Poké Ball]], while [[Gary Oak]] has the other half, as a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry; [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift; and half of the {{DL|Ribbon|Terracotta Medal}} he received after his [[Contest Battle]] with May in the unofficial {{to|Terracotta}} Contest ended in a tie.
