Talk to the first person you see on the way to Viridian City. He is an employee at the Poké Mart there, and he'll give you a free Potion.
1 is a short path that connects Pallet Town to Viridian City in the north. Without Pokés, you cannot catch any of the wild Pidgey or Rattata yet, but you can still battle a few to earn your new Pokémon some experience.

There are only two wild Pokémon species that can be found on 1; Pidgey and Rattata. Walk around in the tall grass and you will eventually find them. Train by fighting them and gaining experience.
The man at the south end of the route works at the Poké Mart in Viridian, and gives you a free Potion as a sample. If you run out, you can return home to have Mom heal your Pokémon.

If your Pokémon is almost out of HP, return to Pallet Town and talk to Mom, or head to Viridian City and use the Poké Center. You should have trained to get to about Level 9 by the time you get to Viridian City. This boring training will pay off, as it will make battling Trainers easier in the long run.

Viridian City
Viridian City is a small city, and the first with a Pokémon Gym. However, the mysterious Gym Leader is out of town, and the Gym has been closed indefinitely.
Now you can explore Viridian City, though there is not much to do here yet. As soon as you enter the city, you will see a Pokémon Center. This is a place where you can heal your battle-weary Pokémon back to full health. Using a Pokémon Center is simple, just speak to the nurse at the counter. She'll ask you if you want your Pokémon healed. Just select HEAL.
Trainers can use the PC by the east wall to manage their Pokémon and items. There are three people in this Poké Center, none of whom do anything worthwhile, apart from giving you tips.

If you walk to the north, there will be an old man lying in the street with a girl standing next to him. If you try to pass, he won't let you. There's nothing of interest in the house to the east of them, just a man and his daughter who don't do anything important. To the south of that house is a Pokémon Trainer School that has only one student; she is reading a notebook that you can read too. The book gives some tips about how to play the game. Southeast of the School is a Poké Mart. You need to stop in here to move on.

When you enter the Poké Mart, the man at the counter immediately asks you if you're from Pallet Town. He then tells you to deliver a package to Oak. This package doesn't do anything for you, so just deliver it to the professor. The clerk won't let you buy anything from the Mart until you deliver the package, so head back to Pallet Town.

Pallet Town
Pokémon Center
The first building you'll reach is the Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and normal status, and Trainers are free to use the PC in the corner.  In addition to accessing your item storage, these PCs can also access your Pokémon storage.  Since you can only carry six with you at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture.  It is typically a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you enter a Pokémon Center.

Upon delivering the parcel to Professor Oak, your rival returns to the lab. Oak then gives you each a Pokédex, which you will (hopefully) use to record the data of all currently-known Pokémon in existence. Apparently, this was Professor Oak's quest when he was younger.
Poké Mart
Behind the Pokémon Center is the local Poké Mart. These stores offer a variety of Pokés, Potions, and other items.  When you step inside, the cashier asks you to deliver I to Professor Oak.  The cashier will not sell anything until the delivery is made.

After receiving the Pokédex, your rival will remark that he doesn't need your help to complete the task, and that he'll get a Town Map from his sister and tell her not to give you one. You can foil his cunning plan by just heading over to his house. She will give you one anyway.
Pokémon Academy
This school teaches young Pokémon Trainers about the basics of battle.  If you inspect the blackboard in the front of the room, you can learn about the five Status ailment that can affect a Pokémon.

Now head back up to Viridian City - and why not train a bit more?  Try to get to level 10 for now.

Once back in the city, head to the Poké Mart and buy 5 Poké Balls. Head up north and you'll notice that the old man blocking the road before has now 'had his coffee' and 'feels great!'. If you're interested, he will show you how to capture a Pokémon.

Oak's Lab
Upon delivering the parcel to Professor Oak, Blue runs in and starts yelling about how much his Pokémon has grown.  Ignoring him, Oak gives you both a Pokédex, a high-tech Pokémon encyclopedia. This little machine will record all available data on the Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of every species.  Stop by your rival's house to receive a I from his sister Daisy before leaving town.

Head back south to the nearest patch of tall grass and catch a Pidgey and a Rattata if you haven't already.
Viridian City
The old man that had blocked your way northward has had his coffee now.  When you pass him, he tries to show you how to catch a Pokémon.  It doesn't work though, and he runs off to buy more Pokés.  Before heading north, detour to 22 in order to battle your rival and catch some new Pokémon.

Route 22
Route 22
If you go west of Viridian, you'll be on 22, where you can capture Rattata, Spearow, Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀. If you catch all these, you should have six pages of your Pokédex filled - not a bad start!  You're well on your way to having a great Pokémon adventure! Oh and if you want to keep a Spearow to train and also obtain Farfetch'd, catch two Spearow.

Further along Route 22, you'll find your rival. Make sure to heal up before battling him. This battle is completely optional but it is still a good source of experience points and cash as well as good practice for the big battle coming up.
22 is a short route that runs west of Viridian. The path is a dead-end right now, but you can hunt for new Pokémon here.

His Pidgey shouldn't be a threat and unless you started out with Charmander, your rival's starter won't know any of its elemental moves (unless you count Leech Seed but it's not a direct attack move so nothing to worry about) so Bulbasaur or Charmander, depending on which one your rival has, shouldn't be a pain to take out. Squirtle, on the other hand, knows Bubble which can easily KO your Charmander so use another one of your (hopefully) trained Pokémon to faint the pesky turtle.

Not far along the route, Blue appears and challenges you to a battle. While his Squirtle or Bulbasaur have both learned a move of their respective type, only Squirtle's Bubble move inflicts damage, posing a threat to your Charmander.

After the battle, heal your Pokémon and then buy some more Poké Balls. You've probably used all five that you had, as you could catch 5 new Pokémon. If you want to, you can try to get every Pokémon as a side quest. It's always a good idea to improve your Pokédex.

Route 2
After the battle, heal your Pokémon and then stock up on Poké Balls.  Head north to reach 2.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #blue color light; 10px; border: 5px solid #red color light;"
2 links Viridian City to Pewter City in the north.  Much of the area is occupied by Viridian Forest, a large maze of trees.  The east side of the route is inaccessible at the moment.  Head through the gate to enter the forest, a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!

Now head north past the old man who had his coffee and you'll be on 2. There's only one patch of tall grass here, and these Pokémon will be about the same as the ones on Route 1, though you can find a handful of new ones as well. You can't do anything interesting on this route yet, since you don't have 01. See those odd, stunted trees blocking the east side of Route 2?  That kind of tree can be cut down once you beat Misty in the Cerulean City Pokémon Gym and complete the S.S. Anne section in Vermilion City.
Now go north through that gate and you'll be in Viridian Forest, a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!
