Appendix:Red and Blue walkthrough/Section 17: Difference between revisions

This is a treacherous, sprawling cave, so make sure that you are well-prepared.  Stock up on {{DL|Poké Ball|Ultra Ball}}s and bring the {{DL|Fishing|Super Rod}} along, too.  Bring a Pokémon that can use {{m|Surf}}, and pack that {{DL|Poké Ball|Master Ball}} if you still have it.  Mewtwo is one tough fighter, even harder to catch than the [[legendary birds]], so you're in for a long battle if you've used it already.  Head north to {{rt|24|Kanto}} and surf south along the river to reach the cave.

Walk up onto the rock slab and climb the ladder to the second floor.

Go down the stairs and surf to the west.  Grab the nearby {{DL|Ether|Max Elixir}}, and climb onto the rock slab just west of that.  Pick up the {{DL|Valuable item|Nugget}} and climb up the ladder.

Go west and surf across the lake for another {{DL|Potion|Full Restore}}, then climb back onto the rock slab.  Follow the southern trail to the next ladder.

Pick up the {{DL|Poké Ball|Ultra Ball}}, then follow the trail to the ladder in the northwest.

Head northeast from the ladder, and get a {{DL|Revive|Max Revive}} from the rock slab to the east.  Follow the trail to the southwest, and climb up onto the central rock slab to find another {{DL|Poké Ball|Ultra Ball}}.  Surf across the small pond, and cut across the rock slab in the northeast.  Surf south to find {{p|Mewtwo}} alone on its island.

Not only is it the strongest Pokémon in the game, but it's already at level 70!  If you don't have the Master Ball, this battle will be even tougher than catching the [[legendary birds]].  Be sure to save the game before approaching it, as you've only got one chance to catch it.  Mewtwo can restore its health nearly a dozen times with {{m|Recover}}, and its only weakness is to {{type|Bug}} attacks.  However, the three damage-inflicting Bug-type moves are fairly weak.  It may be better to use the legendary birds, as they are nearly Mewtwo's equals in terms of power.  Inflicting status ailments can make the battle quite a bit easier, as a {{status|burn}} eats away at its health, and being {{status|Freeze|frozen}} prevents it from attacking or recovering.

Having cleared [[Cerulean Cave]], you have now completed the storyline.  Even though there are no more Gym Leaders to defeat, you still have a task to finish: completing the [[Pokédex]] for [[Professor Oak]].  If you manage to do it, you can show it to the [[Game Freak]] employees in {{ci|Celadon}} for your reward.
