Absol (Japanese: アブソル Absol) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Absol is a quadrupedal felid Pokémon. Its dark blue to gray body is covered in white fur, with a ruff around its neck and chest, and a tuft on the top of its head adorned with a single blue-black oval. It has a cat-like face, a scythe-like tail and a sickle-shaped growth on the side of its head. Its body is sleek and feline, making it well suited for its life in the mountains. Its broad, circular feet are equipped with three claws each, and spikes protrude from the heels of its hind legs and the elbows of its anterior legs. Its head resembles a Yin-Yang symbol.

Gender differences

None

Special abilities

Using its horn, Absol is able to predict when a natural disaster will occur and tries to warn people when one is approaching. This often has the unfortunate effect of Absol itself being blamed for the disaster. The sickle that protrudes from an Absol's head is sharp enough to cut clean slices through metal and rock.

Behavior

It sharply senses even subtle changes in the sky and the land to predict natural disasters. Although Absol rarely venture down into areas inhabited by humans, when they do it is to warn people of the impending catastrophe. Absol tend to be quiet and observant Pokémon. They often carry an air of intelligence and serenity about them, though some can become violent and ill-willed if mistreated. Absol can be extremely vicious adversaries in battle and are known to deal attacks with flawless precision.

Habitat

Absol tend to live in mountainous regions and forests far away from people.

Absol in the anime

Major appearances

Absol first appeared in Jirachi: Wish Maker. The Disaster Pokémon showed up to take Jirachi back to Forina. However, Absol wasn't evil, and helped Jirachi once it returned to Forina.

The Disaster Pokémon made its first anime appearance in Absol-ute Disaster. The people of a town were blaming Absol for all the bad things that were happening to their town during the past month. Ash and friends (along with a boy named Nicky) went out to search whether or not the accusations were true. They found out that the Absol was actually warning the town about a flood.

Drew captured and trained an Absol for the Kanto Grand Festival, as seen in May, We Harley Drew'd Ya!

Minor appearances

An Absol owned by Mollie appeared in What I Did for Love! She used it in a Contest where it battled Brock's Marshtomp and lost.

An Absol appeared in Mutiny in the Bounty, captured by the evil Hunter J and her henchmen after Ash's Pikachu, Melodi's Gardevoir and Team Rocket's Meowth got stolen. The Absol was returned to its rightful owner after Ash, Team Rocket, and Melodi reunited with their Pokémon and some of J's minions were arrested.

An Absol made a brief cameo in Destiny Deoxys and Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

Trivia

  • Although several of Absol's Pokédex entries claim that it can sense disaster, it cannot have the abilites Anticipation or Forewarn.
  • Absol has the highest Attack of any non-legendary Pokémon which is not a part of an evolutionary family.
  • Absol is the only Pokémon that can learn Psycho Cut by level that is not a Template:Type2 itself.
  • Absol appears on Mt. Coronet in places that one can first access when heading to Spear Pillar for Platinum's climax, where a disaster is about to occur.
    • Similarly, in Pokémon Black and White, Absol can be found at the Giant Chasm, a place where disasters are said to befall Trainers and Route 13, 13 being an unlucky number.
  • Absol was the last answer to the Pokémon Trainer's Choice.
  • Absol learns the most variations of Slash of any Pokémon (barring Smeargle). In addition to Slash itself, it can learn Night Slash, Psycho Cut and Shadow Claw. The only variation Absol cannot learn is Cross Poison.
  • Absol is the only non-legendary Pokémon featured on the box art for Pokémon Box Ruby & Sapphire, though it often appears in legends.
  • Absol is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon in the white color group.
  • Absol learns the most moves of all non-Legendary Pokémon: 78.
  • In Pokémon Ranger, Absol deals the most damage to the Styler, at 6, even over Metagross.
  • Absol is the only Dark-type Pokemon that can have the ability Justified.

Origin

Absol is most likely based on the Bai Ze of Chinese mythology, also known as the kutabe or hakutaku. It is generally described as a white beast that can take the form of a large mountainous lion, distinguished by having one or two horns on its head. They also are said to sometimes have an extra eye on their head or back. This "eye" could also be the middle symbol that appears on Absol's forehead. Absol's head is modeled after a Taijitu ("yin-yang"). The Bai Ze (kutabe) predicted that a plague would sweep through the Toyama Prefecture of Japan. It is considered to be intelligent, and gifted with the ability to understand human speech. This would also match the fact of Absol's independence, habitat, and body seeing to be reminiscent of a cougar and its independent nature. It may be also be based on the black cat superstition. Absol's humanized face and feline appearance may also be a homage to the sphinx. A less likely theory is that it may be derived from the white chamois, a mountain dwelling goat like animal of which local superstition claims to represent the embodiment of death and if should any hunter harm one, would die within the year.

Name origin

Absol may derive from 物騒 bussō (dangerous), or it may be a combination of Ab (prefix meaning away or departure) and sol (Latin for sun), referring to its Template:Type2 nature. It may also be a shortening of absolution or absolve, referring to that while Absol foretells disasters, it does not cause them, thereby absolving it of guilt. It may also derive from Absalom, a name which is said to bring bad luck, according to in Jewish tradition.
