Okay so clearly the coloring is based on Kabuki and Noh theater and the red/white fox masks you see during Japanese festivals. But why is it ghost type and what's with the hair
Well one of the most famous Kabuki plays is a ghost story called Yotsuya Kaidan.

To extremely summarize it, husband(Lemon) wants to marry another woman so he kills wife(Oiwa), wife comes back as a ghost, her and her family scare him until he goes mad. There are two famous scenes from this play: the first is when she appears as a Chochin-obake. This is a yokai that is a lantern with a giant mouth (it's the basis for the duskull family actually)z

And the second is her combing her hair and it falling out because she was given poison face cream. I believe this to be the basis for Hisuian Zoroark's long hair. It also explains the lopsidedness of it.
Also the husband in the story is driven mad by the illusions Oiwa cast.
