Zacian may be based on the {{wp|Knights of the Round Table}}, pivotal characters in {{wp|Matter of Britain|Arthurian legend}} responsible for ensuring the peace of the {{wp|Great Britain|British}} kingdom, or the {{wp|Lady of the Lake}}, another pivotal character responsible for giving the sword {{wp|Excalibur}} to {{wp|King Arthur}}, known in Welsh folklore for slaying {{wp|Giants (Welsh folklore)|giants}}. The relationship between Zacian and Zamazenta may reference the relationship between King Arthur and his sister {{wp|Morgan le Fay}}. Its wolf-like appearance may be a reference to {{wp|Geri and Freki}} two wolves said to accompany the god {{wp|Odin}} in {{wp|Norse Mythology}}.
