Mew is similar to a vertebrate {{wp|embryo}}. It is purported by scientists to be the ancestor of all other Pokémon, a reference to the {{wp|recapitulation theory}}. It also shares some traits with {{wp|cats}}, but the animal it most closely resembles is a female  {{wp|jerboa}}, a species of bipedal mouse with massive hind feet and an incredibly long, tufted tail. Some sources state that Mew is based primarily on a jerboa in combination with cats in general, to go so far as to say the pokemon's original name was supposed to be Jermew, but whether these sources are official is unknown.
