How does switching out work with EVs? Say I have a Nosepass, holding a Power Belt, as my lead Pokémon, and find a wild Geodude. I automatically send out my Nosepass, of course, then switch to my Weavile and KO the geodude. Will my Nosepass now gain 5 Defense EVs (Geodude's 1 given + 4 from the Power Belt) or 1, or none?  On a side note, this page is getting pretty long. Are article talk pages ever archived or does that only apply to user talk pages? :OK, I didn't see the conversation a few above me, and unless I'm horribly wrong here, the power items will always give extra EVs when the Pokémon gains EVs from battle, so goodbye. == Are we absolutely sure you must level up to gain EVs from battle in all Gen III-IV games? ==
I just trained a lot of Speed EVs on a level 83 Gardevoir, in HeartGold.  She had a Speed stat of 170 at the beginning of the training, with only 100 Speed EVs.  After gaining 100 additional Speed EVs from battle, I checked her stats again, and her Speed stat was still 170, as expected.  I then used stat berries to wipe out all her HP, Defense, and Special Defense EVs, then gained 52 more Speed EVs from battle.  Since she had 13 total EVs still available, I decided to feed her a single Iron.  After this I checked her stats again, and her Speed stat was suddenly 201.  She is still level 83 and has neither leveled up nor been moved anywhere aside from Route 10 since gaining the 152 Speed EVs.
This seems to indicate that either vitamins or stat berries may be able to cause battle-earned EVs to be applied to stats without need to level up, which seems to mean that it's possible to EV-train a level 100 Pokemon, at least in in HG/SS.
