Kanai was born on March 18, 1964, in {{wp|Tokyo}}, {{wp|Japan}}, and became a seiyū and singer as an adult. Her early famous roles in the Pokémon anime were {{an|Jigglypuff}}, [[Tracey's Marill]], and [[Ash's Bayleef]], all during the [[original series]]. In the {{series|Best Wishes}}, she started voicing [[Iris's Emolga]] and [[James's Yamask]]. In the {{series|XY}}, she took over voicing {{an|Bonnie}} from [[XY087]] to [[XY100]] when [[Mariya Ise]] went on {{wp|maternity leave}}.
