			The numbering isn't necessarily referring to what he put in a Pokéball, it's talking about Pokémon he has owned. Both are considered Ash's Pokémon by the anime, and there have been multiple Pokémon that has never been seen in a ball (Misty's Togetic, Cameron's Lucario, Iris's Axew prior to Journeys) that are counted as owned.
