He finds it has [[evolve]]d into a {{p|Victreebel}} and is very pleased. This Victreebel has an affinity for James which it expresses by {{m|Bite|biting}} down on him whenever it is released from its [[Poké Ball]] (although on some occassions, it would instead attempt to bite [[Meowth (Team Rocket)|Meowth]], [[Jessie]], or even Jessie's [[Jessie's Arbok|Arbok]], presumably meaning it held affection for them, too). This starts the {{cat|anime running gags|running gag}} of James's Pokémon attacking him whenever summoned. Victreebel was used as James's secondary battling Pokémon during the latter half of [[Kanto]], and throughout the [[Orange Islands]]. During [[Johto]] it became his primary combatant. Victreebel is well known for emitting a very high-pitched shriek when it is sent out, making it one of the few Pokémon that does not utter its own name (Though it did say "bel" a few times in it's debut episode, which was the only time it was voiced by Eric Stuart).
