Kanto Battle Frontier
In Queen of the Serpentine!, when going to the Battle Pike, Pikachu was captured by Team Rocket using their fake Battle Pike until rescued by Pike Queen Lucy and her Lucy from the real Battle Pike. Later Ash used Pikachu as his second Pokémon in his Battle Pike challenge against Pike Queen Lucy, Pikachu went up against her Milotic. Pikachu used Thunderbolt, but Lucy, not using defensive strategies, had it taken the attack and counter with Hydro Pump. Both Pokémon used Iron Tail, but Milotic's was stronger. His Quick Attack was countered by Twister and then he was hit with Hydro Pump. Milotic used iron Tail, but Pikachu countered with Volt Tackle, blocking Iron Tail and causing Milotic to become paralyzed due to its secondary effect, although as mentioned by Scott, it dealt damage to Pikachu, wearing him out. Pikachu used Quick Attack, but Milotic used Facade, since Milotic was paralyzed, its power doubled, dealing major damage to Pikachu. Ash noticed the major difference in power, so he came up with an idea and had Pikachu use Thunderbolt on himself, Lucy's supporters mocked him, and Lucy used Twister. However Ash was waiting for this, and with the boost from using Thunderbolt on himself, had Pikachu jump into the Twister, spin and use Volt Tackle, increasing his power and knocking out Milotic, winning Ash the battle and earning him the Luck Symbol.

In Talking a Good Game!, Pikachu was the third Pokémon to battle against Salon Maiden. He went up against her Alakazam. Even though Pikachu was having a hard time, he was able to beat Alakazam with Thunderbolt after overpowering its Psybeam. He went up against Metagross next, but got defeated in the process, making Ash lose the battle. In the next episode, Pikachu was used in a rematch, this time against Espeon. Despite Espeon's speed and power, Pikachu was to able to hang in there and use Thunderbolt to turn the lights off, making Espeon hard to see. After all the lights went back on, Pikachu was able to defeat Espeon with Volt Tackle, earning Ash the Ability Symbol.
