Most of the time, when a trainer has more than one Pokemon left in their team, and the player has his/her Pokemon use Perish song, the trainer will switch out. However, there are unlikely events where the trainer does not switch out. I was playing Pokemon Gold (gen II) while facing Bruno of the Elite Four, and he did not switch out his Machamp despite having two Pokemon left in this team. I would guess that the AI of trainers are slightly different in each generation, but are the chances of the above happening with Bruno the same with the other less-challenging trainers which the player fights on numbered routes? I'm sure this was not the first time this topic was discussed, but I think it should be mentioned one way or another.
