Coalossal appears to be a mix of a {{wp|dinosaur}} or {{wp|kaiju}} and a pile of {{wp|coal}}. Alternatively, its Japanese name suggests that it is a personification of {{wp|Coal mining|coal mines}}. Coalossal's [[Gigantamax]] form may be based on a {{wp|firebox (steam engine)|firebox}}, a {{wp|furnace}}, or {{wp|oven}}. The ornament forming its upper jaw could be the {{wp|pilot (locomotive)|pilot}} of a {{wp|locomotive|locomotive train}}, or the eye guard of medieval helmets. Its skin gets smoother as it evolves, which may represent the process of {{wp|metamorphism}}. Its shiny form's gray coloration may reference how coal turns gray with ash as it burns.
