Serena is a young girl who lives in [[Vaniville Town]] when the protagonist moves into town. Serena is the {{player}}'s [[friend|neighbor]] and their main [[rival]], choosing the [[first partner Pokémon]] which is super effective against the player's. She is also the character who teaches the player and [[Shauna]] how to {{pkmn2|caught|catch}} a Pokémon, catching a {{p|Bunnelby}} with the use of her {{p|Fletchling}}. Soon after, she can be seen in [[Santalune Forest]] with the other friends.

Serena appears alongside Calem as a trophy in the 3DS version. They are both simply referred to as Pokémon Trainer (Pokémon X & Y). Also, [[Jigglypuff (Super Smash Bros.)|Jigglypuff]]'s eighth alternate skin has it wear Serena's red Felt Hat and white Wide-Brim Sunglasses.

Serena, who is based on the [[player character]], forms a [[sync pair]] with {{p|Fennekin}} and its evolved forms {{p|Braixen}} and {{p|Delphox}}, along with {{p|Whimsicott}}, {{Form|Zygarde|50% Forme}} {{p|Zygarde}}, {{p|Greninja}}, and {{p|Fletchling}} in [[Pokémon Masters EX]]. Her Zygarde is capable of transforming into its {{Form|Zygarde|Complete Forme}}. Serena became a playable sync pair on June 30, 2020.

 

Serena has also made notable appearances in the game's Main Stories, [[Legendary Adventures]] and the [[Villain Arc]].

She first joined up with him in ''[[XY005|A Blustery Santalune Gym Battle!]]'' and officially joined him on his {{pkmn|journey}} by ''[[XY007|Giving Chase at the Rhyhorn Race!]]''. She is a [[Pokémon Performer]] who met Ash at {{an|Professor Oak}}'s Pokémon Summer Camp when they were younger. She had a haircut and a new outfit since ''[[XY060|A Showcase Debut!]]''.

The character Yvonne Gabena, more commonly referred to as Y, is modeled after Serena. She is an aspiring {{tc|Sky Trainer}}, having chosen to become one to oppose people's expectations of her following in {{kal|Grace|her mother}}'s footsteps as a {{p|Rhyhorn}} racer. She rotates through several different hairstyles throughout the {{MangaArc|X & Y}}.

'''Serena''' was introduced as a {{TCG|Supporter card}} in the [[Pokémon Trading Card Game]] during the English Sword & Shield Series (the Japanese Sword & Shield Era). It was first released in the Japanese {{TCG|Incandescent Arcana}} subset before debuting in English in the {{TCG|Silver Tempest}} expansion, with artwork by [[Ken Sugimori]]. A [[Full Art]] ultra rare and a rainbow rare version of the card with artwork by [[Megumi Mizutani]] were included in these expansions as well. The card allows the player to either discard up to three cards from their hand, then draw cards until they have five cards in hand, or switch in one of their opponent's Benched {{TCG|Pokémon V}} to the Active Spot.
