Articuno (Japanese: フリーザー Freezer) is a dual-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
In Galar, Articuno has a dual-type regional form, introduced in The Crown Tundra expansion. Neither Kantonian Articuno nor Galarian Articuno are known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Zapdos and Moltres, it is one of the three legendary birds of Kanto.

Biology
Physiology
Articuno is a large Aves  Pokémon with predominantly sky blue plumage and wings said to be made of ice. On its forehead is a crest that consists of three, darker blue rhombus-shaped feathers. It has circular red eyes, a short gray beak, and long, thin gray legs. Each foot has three forward-facing digits and one facing backward. On its chest is a mass of white, downy feathers. Its long, streamer-like tail is longer than its body and the same shade of blue as its crest.
Articuno takes the form of a large bird with predominantly blue plumage. Its coloring is a cyan on its long streamer-like tail and head crest. Its head crest is simple, consisting of three rhombus-shaped feathers on its forehead. Its body is a sky blue, growing lighter on its chest and belly. Its most distinctive feature is its List of Pokémon by body style, which look like they are made of ice. It has a small gray beak and thin, similarly colored legs.

Gender differences
Articuno has the power to control ice at will. When Articuno flaps its wings, it can chill the moisture in the air around it, making snow fall. It flies from icy mountain to icy mountain. According to legend, it appears before doomed travelers lost in icy regions. As seen in Freeze Frame, Articuno sometimes aids travelers and guides them to safety. Articuno lives in cold, List of Pokémon by habitat such as snowy mountains filled with permafrost. Articuno loves Articuno Treats made by Snacksworth, who once encountered and sang with it in the past.
Articuno is a genderless species.

Special abilities
Articuno is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Shadow Chill.
When Articuno flaps its wings, it can chill the moisture in the air around it, making snow fall.

Behavior
Forms
Articuno is one of the legendary birds of Kanto. Articuno is more passive than its counterparts are; due to its isolation in the highest mountains, Articuno dislikes battling. It also flies from icy mountain to icy mountain. It is a poorly understood species, believed by many to be pure myth. According to legend, it appears before doomed travelers lost in icy regions. It is impossible to tell if these are valid sightings, as doomed travelers would have no way of passing on their story of the sighting, or merely delusions of the dying. It is described as being spectacular in flight: with its long tail streaming behind it, and its wings shining like ice. It is said to cause snow to fall when it flies, and has the potential ability to create blizzards.

Articuno has a regional form: Galarian Articuno.

Habitat
In Galar, Articuno has a distinct appearance. Its main body has lavender coloration with a black marking covering its chest. Its feet are black with lavender talons. The three feathers of its crest, which are longer, fused, and folded to the back, have the same purple color as its beak and tail. Its eyes glow light blue, appear to be mostly closed, and are surrounded by a black, mask-like facial disc. When Articuno utilizes its psychic power, the entire mask glows the same color as its eyes, as do the white, feather-like blades of condensed psychic power at the edges of its wings.

Articuno lives in cold, isolated locations, such as mountain peaks. Articuno are known to roost inside the Seafoam Islands of Kanto, Frosty Forest and Mt. Avalanche in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon world, and Mt. Sorbet in Oblivia. Articuno is an extremely rare Pokémon. In Platinum, it roams around Sinnoh, showing that it can withstand warmer temperatures.

Diet
Galarian Articuno keeps itself airborne with its psychic power, almost never having to use its wings for this purpose. Instead, the blades on its wings can be used to slice through iron as easily as paper. Its eyes can fire beams of psychic energy that leave its opponents stuck in place as if frozen solid — this is what earns this Pokémon the name of its Kantonian counterpart. It also has the ability to create mirages of itself in order to fool its opponent and escape. Its elegant and refined movements belie a cold and callous personality. It is constantly migrating around the world but can be found in the Crown Tundra once every few decades congregating with the other birds at the Dyna Tree to eat its fruits.

In the manga
In the Magical Pokémon Journey manga
Articuno appears in the eighth chapter of the Magical Pokémon Journey manga, The Legendary Articuno!. In The Legendary Articuno!, there is an Articuno atop a mountain used by a ski resort. This Articuno is rumored to spirit away the lives of lost travelers, but in reality, it is a friendly Pokémon that runs a Snowcone shop. Pikachu, Clefairy and Jigglypuff enter a Snowcone-eating contest at Articuno's shop, and Articuno also rescues an injured Hazel.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Articuno is shown to seal itself in a block of ice when it senses the presence of an enemy. It strongly dislikes confrontation. However, in Pokémon Adventures volume 3, Team Rocket was able to temporary get hold of it, together with Moltres and Zapdos. It was used by the then-Rocket Executive Koga to try to finish Red and Blue and succeeded in freezing them, but that turned out to be a strategy to let the ninja master's guard down and attack him from behind when Blue's Charizard unfroze them. After his defeat, it is called upon by Sabrina's Kadabra with Zapdos and merged to form Zapmolcuno, a combination that proved almost unstoppable until Saur, the Ivysaur it knocked out of the wall, saved its Trainers with a web created using Vine Whip and evolved to Venusaur to deliver the final blow with Charizard and Blasty. It at last regains its freedom after the defeat and splits from its fellow birds.

Much later, in the GSC saga, it reappears under Green's possession with its fellow birds and is lent to Red in the battle against Will and Karen, who nearly overwhelmed the three with Ho-Oh and Lugia. Since it has not been seen since, it has either been kept in the box or released, its true status unknown.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga
Articuno debuted in Will You Risk Your Life To Play The Magic Game?! and was caught by Red in the next chapter.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga
Blaine catches an Articuno with Satoshi's help.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga
Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Melee
When released from a Poké Ball, Articuno will use a Blizzard attack that freezes any opponent that is caught in it for a few seconds.

Trophy information
Clouds gather, the barometer plunges, and fresh snow falls from the frigid air when this legendary Pokémon takes wing. Graceful and elegant, it boasts long tail feathers that flap in the wind and are lovely to behold. As would be expected, its combat moves are based on its cold nature; they include Ice Beam and Blizzard.

In Japanese, the wording 「でんせつの れいとうポケモン」 (Legendary Freezing Pokémon) is found in the Pokédex entry from Pokémon Blue and LeafGreen. This is a reference to Articuno's category (English: Freeze Pokémon; Japanese: れいとうポケモン). However, in the English version of LeafGreen, this was changed to "legendary bird Pokémon" instead, which is an expression also found in several other Pokédex entries of the three legendary birds.

Origin
Origin
This Pokémon's appearance is based on the Simurgh , deriving from the Persian رخ Roc (mythology), which is that of a giant arctic bird. Also, its long tail and small body may be reference to the rare bird, the quetzal. It is also anatomically very similar to the White-throated Magpie-jay.
Articuno seems to take inspiration from various mythical birds such as the Persian Simurgh, Huma bird, and Roc (mythology), or the Chinese Fenghuang. Many of these rare birds were said to live on high mountain peaks and are symbols of good fortune. Tales of their benevolence might be the inspiration behind Articuno’s reputation for rescuing people. Anatomically, it is very similar to the white-throated magpie-jay, and its streamer-like tail feathers are similar to the resplendent quetzal.

As suggested by the Pokédex entries, the three legendary birds appear to be embodiments of seasons, Articuno represents winter, while Zapdos and Moltres represent summer and spring, respectively. Autumn is however unrepresented.

Name origin
Galarian Articuno’s facial feathers resemble a mask worn at a masquerade ball as well as some form of protective eyewear such as glasses, goggles, or a visor. Its freezing glare might be a reference to the Cockatrice, a mythical reptile/bird monster that could turn people to stone with its gaze. Its Shiny coloration is similar to Kantonian Articuno's regular coloration.
