'''Pupitar''' ([[List of Japanese Pokémon names|Japanese]]: '''サナギラス''' ''Sanagiras'') is a dual-type {{2t|Rock|Ground}} Pokémon.

==Biology==
===Physiology===
Pupitar is a {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} encased inside a thick grayish-blue shell, sporting a hardness that is comparable to bedrock. Its red eyes can be seen through two holes in the shell, and two more holes directly above resemble eyebrows. The upper portion of its body is covered by a mask-like plate with four large spikes on either side. Three additional spikes protrude from its forehead, and another pair of spikes are visible on either side of its lower body.
Pupitar are somewhat large Pokémon that are encased inside a thick shell made of rock. They have several spikes and holes for eyes and what appears to be eyebrows. They appear much like other pupa Pokémon like {{p|Metapod}} and {{p|Kakuna}}, but are far from helpless, as they possess enough power to topple mountains. Since its arms and legs are developing inside the shell, Pupitar are capable of venting gas to propel themselves around.

====Gender differences====
While its arms and legs are developing inside the shell, Pupitar uses compressed gas to propel itself around, and can generate enough force to knock down mountains. Pupitar even performs this technique even when it sleeps. Pupitar lives and moves freely around harsh {{DL|List of Pokémon by habitat|Mountain Pokémon|mountain}} ranges. As mentioned in {{g|Sleep}}, Pupitar is known to move around even when sleeping.<ref>''[[Pokémon Sleep|Sleep Style Dex]]''</ref>

===Origin===
===Origin===
Pupitar is based on a pupa, as it is between its evolutionary line's larval stage ({{p|Larvitar}}) and adulthood ({{p|Tyranitar}}).
Pupitar appears to be based on a {{wp|pupa}}, as it is between its evolutionary line's larval stage ({{p|Larvitar}}) and adulthood ({{p|Tyranitar}}), which is more appropriate for {{wp|insect}}s rather than {{wp|reptile}}s.

====Name origin====
====Name origin====
Pupitar's name is based on ''{{wp|pupa}}'', the stage in some insects between the larval stage and adulthood. Its Japanese name may be based on 蛹 ''sanagi'', pupa, and 嫌い ''kirai'', hate, or ''{{wp|Anguirus}}'', a Japanese {{wp|kaiju|kaijū}}.
Pupitar may be derived from ''{{wp|pupa}}'', the stage in some insects between the larval stage and adulthood, and ''{{wp|Tarasque}}''.

Sanagiras may be a combination of 蛹 ''sanagi'' (pupa), 嫌い ''kirai'' (hated), and ソーラス ''-saurus'' (Greek-derived suffix for dinosaur names).
