In Sword and Shield, certain Ribbons grant the Pokémon who bear them ability to have a title that is displayed when it's switched into the battle.
In Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet, any one of a Pokémon's Ribbons or marks can be attached to it, granting that Pokémon a corresponding title that is displayed whenever it is sent into battle.

League Ribbons are obtained by entering the Hall of Fame in different regions, and are all retained if a Pokémon is transferred to a later generation. All Pokémon in the party will receive the Ribbon, even if some of them fainted or were never sent out in battle.

Among games in which Ribbons can be awarded, HeartGold and SoulSilver are the only games where winning the Pokémon League does not award a Ribbon.

Contest Spectacular and Super Contest Show Ribbons
The Hoenn Contest Spectacular Ribbons are obtained by winning Pokémon Contest Spectaculars in Generation VI. They were reused in the Super Contest Shows in Generation VIII, with the addition of the new Twinkling Star Ribbon.
The Contest Spectacular Ribbons are obtained by winning Master Rank Pokémon Contest Spectaculars in Generation VI or Super Contest Shows in Generation VIII. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl added the Twinkling Star Ribbon as additional variation to these. Unlike previous Contest Ribbons, they are still preserved on their own and do not get collapsed into a Contest Memory Ribbon.

These Ribbons are retained if a Pokémon with them is transferred to a later generation.

Gift Ribbon descriptions
Gift Ribbon descriptions
Data for the following Gift Ribbon descriptions appear in the Generation III and Generation IV games. They were removed in the Generation V games and onwards.
List of Ribbons in the games/Gift Ribbon descriptions

By participating in certain Pokémon activities (such as the Regional, National, and Global tournaments for 2003, 2004, and 2005), Ribbon descriptions would be associated with certain Gift Ribbons distributed, based on the event itself.

In Generation III, all Gift Ribbons by default have an empty description associated with them. Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD make use of the "Ribbon awarded for clearing all difficulties." and "100-straight Win Commemorative Ribbon" descriptions by assigning them to the National and Earth Ribbons respectively. These assignments are then transferred to any Generation III handheld game whenever those games receive a Pokémon with their respective Ribbon attached. The descriptions are hard coded for both Ribbons in Generation IV and onwards.

In Generation IV, certain Gift Ribbons by default have the description "A commemorative Ribbon obtained in a mysterious location." or "A commemorative Ribbon obtained in a Mystery Zone." associated with them. When the player receives a Pokémon holding either a Classic Ribbon or a Premier Ribbon via Mystery Gift, their descriptions are assigned to "A Ribbon that proclaims love for Pokémon" and "Special Holiday Ribbon" respectively. The descriptions are hard coded for both Ribbons in Generation V and onwards.

Generation III
The names of the following Gift Ribbon descriptions appear in a text dump from Ruby and Sapphire. Text strings for these Ribbons also appear in the Generation IV games. There are 64 total, with only two (for the Earth and National Ribbons) seeing actual use in Generation III and another two (for the Classic and Premier Ribbons) in Generation IV.
