A Mega Stone (Japanese: メガストーン Mega Stone) is a type of held item introduced in Pokémon X and Y. It allows Pokémon to Mega Evolve. According to Professor Sycamore, Mega Stones are the results of Evolutionary stones being irradiated by the power of the Legendary Pokémon Xerneas or Yveltal. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it has been revealed that Mega Stones are also periodically created from meteorites that fall down from the sky in a form of green light.
A Mega Stone (Japanese: メガストーン Mega Stone) is a type of item introduced in Generation VI that, if activated with a Key Stone, causes a specific Pokémon to undergo Mega Evolution. Professor Sycamore theorizes that Mega Stones are the results of Evolution stones being irradiated by the power of Xerneas or Yveltal, the Legendary Pokémon of life and destruction, when AZ first used the ultimate weapon. There are 47 known Mega Stones, corresponding to 45 different Pokémon.

From Generation VIII to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Mega Stones (and Mega Evolution) do not appear in the core series, but they do appear in other media.

Mechanics
In the core series
During a battle, a Trainer can use their Key Stone (held in the Mega Ring, Mega Bracelet, or Z-Ring for the player character) to Mega Evolve a Pokémon that holds its corresponding Mega Stone before it attacks. Pokémon only remain Mega Evolved during battles and Pokémon Contest Spectactulars, and will revert to their original state once the battle has ended or if they faint. Every Pokémon that can undergo Mega Evolution has a corresponding Mega Stone that is named after it, except for Rayquaza, which instead needs to know the move Dragon Ascent to Mega Evolve. Some Pokémon have multiple different Mega Stones for their species.
Mechanics
During battle, a Mega Stone can be activated while its corresponding Pokémon is on the field. The stone must be held by the Pokémon or, in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! (which do not feature held items), be in the possession of the Pokémon's Trainer. The Pokémon's Trainer can use their Key Stone to activate the Mega Stone at the start of a turn, causing the Pokémon to undergo Mega Evolution. Mega Stones are not consumed upon use, but only one Mega Stone use is possible per Trainer per battle. Mega Stones cannot be activated for Pokémon that have transformed into their corresponding Pokémon (either by Transform or Imposter).

Mega Stones cannot be transferred to or from the correct holder during battle: Thief and Covet do not take the Mega Stone, Knock Off does not remove the Mega Stone, Trick and Switcheroo fail, Fling and Bestow fail, and Symbiosis does not activate. Embargo and Magic Room also cannot prevent the use of Mega Stones to Mega Evolve Pokémon. Mega Stones are not consumed upon use, but only one Pokémon can Mega Evolve per battle.
As held items, Mega Stones cannot be transfered to or from their corresponding Pokémon in battle; Thief and Covet will not steal them, Knock Off will not remove them or cause extra damage, Trick, Switcheroo, Fling, and Bestow will fail, and Symbiosis will not activate. Embargo, Magic Room, and Klutz also do not prevent the use of Mega Stones.

Availability
During a Contest, if a Mega Stone is being held by its corresponding Pokémon, the Pokémon's Coordinator will activate it automatically if the Pokémon performs a Spectacular Talent.
Generation VI
In X and Y, all Mega Stones not directly given or sold to the player can only be found between 8 and 8:59 p.m. after Professor Sycamore has upgraded the player's Mega Ring to detect them. These Mega Stones do not appear as item balls in the overworld; rather, they appear as sparkles on the ground.

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mega Stones on the ground appear as sparkles, like in Pokémon X and Y. Many Mega Stones that can be found in locations the player can already access will not appear until the player defeats or captures Groudon/Kyogre. Some can only be obtained by meeting certain requirements, such as clearing all the Master Ranks in the Contest and then defeating Lisia in one of the Master Rank Contests in order to receive the Lucarionite from Chaz or receiving the Garchompite from Aarune after achieving Platinum Rank in the Super-Secret Base by collecting 1,000 Flags.
Acquisition
Generation VI
X and Y
Some Mega Stones are given or sold to the player by NPCs. Most others can be found in various locations around Kalos, appearing as sparkles on the ground rather than item balls. These can only be found after Professor Sycamore upgrades the player's Mega Ring in Anistar City, which only happens after the player defeats their rival in Kiloude City. These Mega Stones also only appear from <time datetime="20:00:00"></time> to <time datetime="20:59:59></time>, while the Anistar Sundial is active. Some Mega Stones are exclusive to each game.

The Mega Stone for Blaziken, the Blazikenite, cannot be found through normal gameplay in Pokémon X and Y. However, it can be obtained via special distributions and trading. The Mega Stone for Diancie, the Diancite, also cannot be obtained through normal gameplay in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire; instead, the stone can be obtained by having a Diancie in the party and activating an in-game event that results in the player being given a Diancite.
The Blazikenite, Latiasite, and Latiosite are only obtainable via trade. However, the former was also an event item. Mega Stones introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are unobtainable.

Pokémon holding Mega Stones introduced in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (except Latiasite and Latiosite) cannot be traded to Pokémon X and Y.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Some Mega Stones are only obtainable by meeting certain requirements, such as defeating Lisia in a Master Rank Contest Spectacular to receive the Lucarionite from Chaz, or receiving the Garchompite from Aarune after reaching the Super-Secret Base Platinum Rank. However, most Mega Stones appear around Hoenn as sparkles on the ground, much like in X and Y. Many of these only appear after the player defeats or captures Groudon or Kyogre.

Generation VII
The Diancite is unobtainable through normal gameplay; instead, it can be received from an NPC in any Pokémon Center if the player has a Diancie—an event Pokémon—in their party.
In Sun and Moon, only Mega Stones for Pokémon in the Alola Pokédex and for the fully-evolved Kanto starters are available through normal gameplay. Dexio gives the player the Alakazite and a Key Stone after defeating him on Ancient Poni Path after becoming Champion. Most Mega Stones can be purchased at the Battle Tree for 64 Battle Points. Red will give the player all Mega Stones associated with the starter Pokémon of the Kanto region after being defeated in a Single Challenge at the Battle Tree. The remaining Mega Stones have been distributed as event items; by participating in Pokémon Global Link online competitions or with universal codes provided on the official Pokémon website.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, all Mega Stones are available for purchase at the Battle Tree except for Diancite, which is given to the player at Olivia's Konikoni City in Konikoni City for showing a man a Diancie, and the Kanto Starter Mega Stones, which are received from Red or Blue. Dexio also gives the player Alakazite in these games, but he is found at the entrance to Poni Meadow in Poni Plains.
Pokémon holding Mega Stones introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (except the Latiasite and Latiosite) cannot be traded to X and Y.

Universal codes for event-exclusive Mega Stones
Generation VII
These codes were usable in all regions of Pokémon Sun and Moon, but expired at 8:59 Japan Standard Time on November 1, 2017.
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon
{| style="margin:auto; background: #items color dark; 10px; border: 5px solid #items color light"
No Mega Stones are received before the player becomes Champion. The player receives an Alakazite, along with a Key Stone, from Dexio after defeating him at Ancient Poni Path or Poni Plains. The Kanto first partners' Mega Stones can be received by defeating Red or Blue in a challenge at the Battle Tree. Many Mega Stones (including the Alakazite) can be purchased at the Battle Tree for 64BP each. In Sun and Moon, only the Mega Stones for Pokémon in the List of Pokémon by Alola Pokédex number can be purchased. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, all Mega Stones except the Kanto first partners' and the Diancite can be purchased.

In Sun and Moon, the remaining Mega Stones are only obtainable via trade. However, they were all also event items. They were distributed via universal serial codes provided on the official Pokémon website, which were usable in all software regions but expired on <time datetime="2017-10-31 23:59:59"> at </time>. Some were also distributed via unique serial codes to players who participated in certain Online Competitions on the Pokémon Global Link.

Mega Stones for currently owned Pokémon can be bought and immediately attached to its corresponding Pokémon using the Special Stone Shop. The first Mega Stone of the player's choice is free (unless either the Red or Blue Orb is chosen instead) and every one after it costs 5 Poké Diamonds. During battle, Mega Evolution can be performed by tapping the Mega Evolution button using a Pokémon equipped with a Mega Stone in battle. Mega Evolution can be used again on any Pokémon in the same battle, unlike in the main games.
