Carnivine is a green plant-like Pokémon resembling a Venus flytrap. Its circular eyes have small pupils, and it has spiky teeth. Its stem is yellow with green spots, with red and green vines beneath with the appearance of tentacles. It has two arms resembling leaves with three leafy 'fingers' each.
Carnivine is very gluttonous, and is known to have an unruly temper. It is capable of hanging from tree branches using its vines, while its mouth can open to about 180 degrees wide. With its mouth wide open, Carnivine attracts the prey it waits for with sweet-smelling saliva, then chomps down. However, it takes a whole day to eat prey. Carnivine's diet consists mostly of insects and small bugs. It lives in forests and marshes.

Physiology
Held items
Its appearance is based off of a Venus Flytrap. Instead of having legs like other Grass Pokémon (like Bellsprout), it has vines attached to the end of its stem, giving them the appearance of tentacles. The leaves act as arms, and the inside of its mouth secretes a sweet-smelling saliva, which it uses to attract prey.

Major appearances
James's Carnivine
James has a Carnivine that debuted in Two Degrees of Separation!, where he retrieved it from one of his old mansions in Sinnoh. The episode also marked the species' debut. James was eventually forced to leave it at the Team Rocket HQ when he headed to Unova so that it wouldn't attract attention as a Pokémon not native to the region.

Trivia
*Carnivine is the only Grass Pokémon to have Levitate as its ability.
* In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Toxic is depicted as two purple orbs spinning around each other towards the target. However, when Carnivine uses Toxic, the orbs travel erratically. The same animation is used for Spinda.
* Carnivine and Tropius are the only non-legendary Grass Pokémon that do not evolve from or into another Pokémon.
* Carnivine is the only Pokémon with the ability Levitate that is resistant to the Ground type without the Ability.
* This Pokémon shares its name, possibly by coincidence, with a monster from the Dragon Quest series.
