Biology
Physiology
Yanma is a large, red insect Pokémon that resembles a dragonfly. Compared to its long, thin abdomen, its thorax is short and wide. It has three pairs of gray two-toed legs and two pairs of wings with red bands on them. The see through wings are described as frail and thin. A bright green mask marking covers most of its face, and it has two spikes on top of its head. Its blue eyes can see all around its body at 360 degrees without even moving its head. This allows Yamma to have a high evasiveness. The end of Yanma's tail has two flat extensions from the sides and two gray spikes in the center.
Yanma is a large, red dragonfly Pokémon. It has a long thin abdomen and a comparatively short thorax. It has three pairs of two-toed legs and two pairs of wings with red bands on them. Its head is also mostly red, except for its very large, bright green eyes, which take up most of the space on its head. Its eyes can see all around its body alowing it to have an extremely high evaseness, and the end of Yanma’s tail has two flat extensions from the sides and two spikes in the center.

Gender differences
Yanma is a skillful flier. It can make sudden stops, turn in midair and hover in place by flapping its wings at a high speed. Yamma's eyes ensure the prey will not escape its sight, even when behind. It can also generate shock waves capable of breaking glass or even launching a house skyward by flapping its wings very fast. Yanma is often found in List of Pokémon by habitat. It hunts insects for food, using its eyesight to spot and its flight abilities to pursue prey. Yanma is also territorial, flitting around to guard its territory.
None.

Special abilities
Evolution
It can use its Compoundeyes to see completely around itself, making it easier to capture prey and avoid predators. It also can flap its wings very fast to generate shock waves which can break glass. Yanma's trademark attack seems to be SonicBoom, as seen in the anime and Pokédex.
Yanma evolves into Yanmega.

Behavior
Major appearances
Jessie's Yanma
In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, a rookie Trainer named Tyler was about to capture a Yanma that his Piplup had weakened, when Team Rocket showed up, and Jessie captured it instead. They sent it to Giovanni; however, Team Rocket already had obtained a large number of Yanma and so Giovanni returned it to them. When Jessie used Yanma in battle, it used AncientPower and evolved into a Yanmega. During this time, another weakened Yanma got away. A third Yanma appeared afterwards, and Tyler finally captured that one.

Other
Yanma first appeared in Wings n' Things. It was carelessly breaking glass in a town.

Minor appearances
Yanma also made a cameo in Pikachu's PikaBoo, and another as one of the Pokémon to appear in Latios and Latias' garden in Pokémon Heroes.

A Yanma appeared in All in a Day's Wurmple, under the ownership of Forrester Franklin.

A group of Yanma also appeared in The Rise of Darkrai.

Yanma also appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part One.

Yanma appeared in Zoroark: Master of Illusions as a few of the many local Pokémon who lives in Crown City. Three of them took part in surrounding Zorua in the park along several other Pokémon to attack him, angry at Zorua for what Zoroark did to the city. Before a fight broke out, the Yanma, along with the other Pokémon, were calmed by Celebi.

Main series
Major appearances
Jessie's Yanma
In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, Tyler was about to caught a Yanma that his Piplup had weakened when the Team Rocket trio showed up and Jessie caught her instead. They sent her to Giovanni; however, Team Rocket already had obtained a large number of Yanma, and so Giovanni returned her to them. When Jessie used Yanma in battle, she used Ancient Power and evolved into a Yanmega.

Other
Yanma debuted in Wings n' Things, under the ownership of Zachary Evans. Because it was breaking glass in a town due to its inability to control its wings' sonic aspect, Zachary reluctantly abandoned it. Yanma was then captured by Team Rocket and used for one of their schemes, but Zachary rescued it and had it blast the trio off.

In All in a Day's Wurmple, Forrester Franklin's Yanma battled Ash alongside Ariados in a Double Battle, with the two going up against Pikachu and Treecko. After a long battle, Ash emerged victorious.

In Tag! We're It...!, a Yanma competed in the Hearthome City Tag Battle Competition. It fought alongside a Bagon against Brock's Sudowoodo and Holly's Wingull, but they were defeated.

In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, Tyler was set on catching a Yanma throughout the episode. In the end, he managed to catch one.

Minor appearances
A Yanma appeared in Pikachu's PikaBoo.

In Pokémon Heroes: Latios & Latias, a Yanma was living in the Secret Garden. Others flew over the Tour de Alto Mare competitors.

In That's Just Swellow, a Yanma competed in the Crossgate PokéRinger.

In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, multiple Yanma were living in the Tree of Beginning, while another was seen in the opening sequence of the movie.

Multiple Yanma appeared in The Rise of Darkrai.

Two Yanma appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! (Part 1). A third appeared alongside them in the second part.

In The Thief That Keeps on Thieving!, Tyler weakened a Yanma, but it managed to flee.

Multiple Yanma appeared in Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

In Zoroark: Master of Illusions, multiple Yanma were living in Crown City. Three took part in surrounding Zorua in the park along with the other Pokémon with the intention of attacking him in retribution for what Zoroark did to the city. Before a fight could break out, the Sunkern, along with the other Pokémon, were calmed down by Celebi.

A Yanma appeared in a flashback in Time After Time!.

In Trade, Borrow, and Steal!, a Yanma was part of Kricketina Kylie's Bug-type Pokémon collection, as shown in her Rotom Phone.

In The Mew from Here!, a Yanma was seen on Faraway Island.

Yanma debuted in Off Course with Corsola, where Crystal caught it and sent it to Professor Oak via the Portable Transfer System. It was seen in its Poké Ball on a shelf.

A School Kid's Yanma was seen in Oh, It's Ho-Oh!, going towards the Indigo Plateau.

A trio of Yanma was accidentally let loose in Yikes, It's Yanma!, causing minor chaos at the Indigo Plateau by taking an infant hostage. Gold quelled them by taking advantage of their near-360-degree vision with Gold (Adventures)'s Poké Ball and then successfully rescued the child.

A Yanma appeared in The Last Battle XIII as one of the Pokémon sent to participate in the fight in Ilex Forest.

Trivia
Trivia
*Yanma weighs exactly the same as Lucas in Diamond and Pearl. It shares this characteristic with Sudowoodo, Skuntank, Togekiss, and Fearow.
* Yanma shares the same base Speed stat with its evolved form.
*Prior to Generation IV, Yanma could only learn one Flying move: Wing Attack, and could not learn any Bug moves via leveling up.
* In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, despite being able to learn Leech Life through breeding, Yanma cannot learn it via TM28. Its evolved form can, however.
**In Gold and Silver, though, it could not learn any Flying-type moves.
*In Gold and Silver, the spikes at the end of Yanma's tail are actually located under the tail.
*Yanma is the last Pokémon in Johto Pokédex order that has the same number that it has in the New Pokédex, due to its evolution and the evolutions of Aipom, Lickitung, Piloswine, and Tangela.
* Yanma and its evolution, Yanmega, along with Togetic, Togekiss, Giratina and Smeargle (by Sketch), are the only Pokémon that can learn all three variations of AncientPower.

Origin
Origin
Yanma is based on a dragonfly, possibly the red-veined darter. Because of its size and weight, it might have been inspired by extinct giant dragonflies in the Epiophlebia genus.
Yanma seems to be based on a dragonfly, possibly the banded darter (dragonfly). Because of its size and weight, it might have been inspired by prehistoric ancestors to modern dragonflies and Damselfly in the Meganeura genus, commonly referred to as "griffinflies". This is further supported by its evolution, Yanmega, which is much more closely linked to ancient dragonflies, and whose offspring did not have a larval stage, instead hatching directly into a smaller version of their adult phase, as Yanma is a fully formed dragonfly. This connection is further referenced by its evolution method.

Name origin
Name origin
Yanma's name is an abbreviation of its Japanese name, which is in turn 蜻蜓 yanma, large dragonfly, partially doubled. It may derive from Oniyanma
Yanma and Yanyanma derive from 蜻蜓 yanma (large dragonfly).
