A valuable item is an item which generally serves no practical purpose, but can be sold at Poké Marts, usually for a high price. In  Generation II, you are able to buy some of these items (but only one of each per day) on a specific day and time in the Underground Path of Goldenrod City.
A valuable item is an item which generally serves no practical purpose other than to be sold, usually for a high price.

List of valuable items
In Generation II and IV, it is possible to buy some of these items for a discount (but only one of each per day) on Mondays in the morning in the Goldenrod Tunnel.

Nugget
In Pokémon Black, some of these items are sold in Black City, albeit for prices much higher than they can be sold for. Often, these items later become exchangeable items. In Generation V, mulches, flutes, and the Odd Keystone became valuable items due to losing their function. While most of these items can be sold at Poké Marts, those introduced in Generation V can only be sold to certain item maniacs. Besides Big Nuggets, Pearl Strings, and Comet Shards, the player can also sell normal Nuggets, Pearls, Big Pearls, Stardust, and Star Pieces to the maniac inside the Icirrus City Pokémon Center, for double the price presented below.
This is the original valuable item, introduced since Generation I. It can be sold for PDollar5000, making it the most valuable of the items in this list. It can be found in fields, caves and buildings, or given to the player for completing a quest or as a gift (for example, the Nugget Bridge in Cerulean City). They can also be found attached to some wild Grimer and Muk, and can be found by a Pokémon with the Pickup ability. In Generation IV it is officially announced that nuggets are made of gold, though the Generation III sprite revealed this beforehand. In Generation II Nuggets could be recieved for free by participating in Buena's Password Show at night.

Pearl and Big Pearl
Valuable items that can be sold in Poké Marts
These items, introduced in Generation II, can be sold for PDollar700 and PDollar3750, respectively. While not as common as the Nugget is, they can be found in the underwater routes in Hoenn. Because of being Pokémon based on clamshells, which in real life produce pearls, certain Shellder and Cloyster, and also Clamperl in the case of the Big Pearl, can be found holding these items. Additionally, some wild Gulpin and Swalot can also hold them. Because of being bigger and more valuable, the Big Pearl is harder to find.

Stardust and Star Piece
|}
Also introduced in Generation II, these items can be sold for PDollar1000 and PDollar4900 respectively. Other than being rarely found lying around on a route or cave, they can be found attached to certain Staryu and Starmie, due to them being based on starfish. It was found in the coding that the Stardust can also be held by wild Jirachi in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, although there are no actual wild Jirachi in the games. The Star Piece can additionally be found in the Sinnoh Underground. Due to the Star Piece being a real piece of gem (and not only dust, unlike the Stardust), it can be sold for more money, and is generally harder to find.

Tinymushroom and Big Mushroom
Mulches
These items were also introduced in Generation II, and can be sold for PDollar250 and PDollar2500, respectively. They can sometimes be found lying around, particularly in caves, and can also be held by wild Paras and Parasect. These items are very valuable to certain maniacal fan segments, according to the games. These items actually serve a purpose as an exchangable item in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, as they can be given to the Move Tutor (two Tinymushrooms or one Big Mushroom) to teach a Pokémon a move it is capable of learning through level-up, even if the Pokémon is of a higher level than when a certain move is learned. However, they don't serve any other purpose on any of the other games they appear in, so they are included in this list.
Mulch

Rare Bone
Flutes
This item was introduced in Generation IV, and sells for PDollar5000, the equivalent of a Nugget. It can be found in the Sinnoh Underground. Another one can be found in the room the player battled Giratina in Turnback Cave when they return a second time.
Flute
Flutes were considered valuable items only in Black and White, Black and White, X and Y.

Slowpoketail
Valuable items that can only be sold to item maniacs
Introduced in Generation II.  Offered by Team Rocket on Route 32 for PDollar1,000,000, the player must refuse (as that is one more unit of money then can be carried) and save all the Slowpoke Team Rocket has kidnapped.  The item later appears in a shop Team Rocket's running in Mahogany Town for the much more affordable price of PDollar9800, but it can only be bought before meeting Lance at the Lake of Rage, at which point the shop won't sell anything until Team Rocket is defeated in Goldenrod City.  The item is never seen again after meeting Lance.
The following items have only been made available in Generation V for the express purpose of being sold to the Item maniac in Undella Town. Like many valuable items introduced in Generation V, they cannot be sold normally in Poké Marts.

Surprisingly enough, the Slowpoketail is a useless item with no actual usage passed its monotary value. For instance, although its said a Slowpoke will use its tail for fishing it has no effect of fishing at all. It also has no affect on Shellder despite the fact that under normal circumstances when it comes in contact with a Slowpoke's tail it will induce a spiral evolution.

One key point of interest is when first introduced, the Team Rocket member mentions the Slowpoketail's value as a delicacy, being the first time that its ever mentioned of the use of any Pokémon as an actual food (for human consumption), a rather controversial subject of what kind of creature is the contributor of meat (of any kind) in the Pokémon world.

In Reunion Battles In Nimbasa!, a Pretty Wing was included in the full set of wings that was promised as a prize for winning the Club Battle tournament. The set was eventually won by Iris, who later sent it to the Village of Dragons.

In Defending the Homeland!, Clemont mentioned having used Big Mushrooms as a part of the new food he had just made for the group.

In Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, Mallow found multiple Tiny and Big Mushrooms and Sophocles found a Star Piece during a Stoutland Search treasure hunt set up for Ash and his classmates by Olivia. In the dub, the Star Piece was incorrectly referred to as a Comet Shard.

A Nugget appeared in Why Not Give Me a Z-Ring Sometime?, where a man was seen polishing it, only to have it stolen by an item-snatching Gengar nicknamed "Greedy Rapooh".

In A Recipe for Success!, Mallow got some dried-up Big Mushrooms from Oranguru to be used at Aina's Kitchen.

Gold, Silver & Crystal
In Ursaring Major, Team Rocket had cut off the tails of a herd of Slowpoke by the Slowpoke Well near Azalea Town, planning to sell them for profit. However, they were stopped by Silver and his Silver before they could do so.

Trivia
* The Slowpoke Tail is actually a useless item with no function past its monetary value. Although it is said that a Slowpoke will use its tail for fishing, a Slowpoke Tail has no effect on fishing at all, nor does it have any effect on Shellder despite the fact that contact with a Slowpoke's tail usually induces a spiral change.
* The first time that humans eating Pokémon is mentioned explicitly in the games is when a Team Rocket member mentions the SlowpokeTail's value as a delicacy. In Pokémon X and Y, Slowpoke Tail is one of the dishes served by Lumiose City restaurants in Lumiose City.
* The Rare Bone and Thick Club share the same Bag sprite.
* The Relic Gold and the Comet Shard are tied for the highest-selling items in the core series, selling for Pdollar30,000 each.
