DJ Mary debuted in Air Time, where she was first seen at the Goldenrod Radio Tower. Ash appeared on her show to talk about his Pokémon and his aspirations. She was due to narrate the next radio segment, a drama series, but TRT had earlier destroyed the radio station's tape reels. Team Rocket, disguised as the Dugtrio Trio, and Ash's group helped fill in the voice actor roles while DJ Mary narrated the radio drama about "Prince Goldenrod". She was forced to improvise after Team Rocket added their own twists to the script, but she managed to tie everything together.

In Will the Real Oak Please Stand Up?, DJ Mary and Professor Oak were going to do a live show in Maroon Town, but Team Rocket got wind of this and disguised themselves as Oak and Mary. With the help of Nurse Joy, a quiz show determined who was the real Oak and DJ Mary.

In Oaknapped!, DJ Mary informed Tracey that Oak disappeared before he could tape a segment for her show. Tracey and Ritchie later caught up with her and Officer Jenny at Seafoam Island's TV station. Together, they located Oak and defeated his kidnappers, Butch and Cassidy.

Character
DJ Mary is well known for her celebrity interviews and radio segments, which are broadcast across the Kanto and Johto regions. She is good friends with Professor Oak and often works with him. She is also a celebrity in her own right and has her own fan-club.

DJ Mary worries about her broadcast schedules, though she is composed and upbeat during her performances. She is quick-thinking and can easily go impromptu during a radio interview, as seen in Air Time, when she noticed Ash's overwhelming nervousness.

History
Gold, Silver & Crystal
Mary is first seen hosting a radio show when Gold, a fan of hers, bursts into the recording session. Gold reveals that Mary's Smeargle, Smea-Smea, painted his face earlier and wishes to have his revenge on it. Gold's anger leads into an argument with Whitney, who was the one who gave Smea-Smea to Mary in the first place. After the argument gets good ratings for the show, the Radio Director, Hirō, decides to market it by organizing a race with Gold and Whitney as the competitors. Although confused at the whole situation, Mary acts as one of the hosts covering the event.

Later, Mary joins Whitney, Hirō, and the Pokémon Association Chairman in traveling to the Mahogany Gym in order to warn Pryce of Suicune, which had been challenging all of the Gym Leaders in Johto.

At the Indigo Plateau, Mary appears as one of hosts of the Pokémon League. She gets caught up in the Masked Man's attack of the League with his army of mind-controlled Team Rocket Grunts. With Smea-Smea's Fire attacks that it copied from Entei, Mary helps stop one of the Masked Man's ice dolls permanently. After the Masked Man was defeated, Mary returned to her life as a radio show host.

It first appeared subjecting Gold to a prank while he was sleeping by using its tail to draw over his face. Gold subsequently chased after Smea-Smea all the way to Goldenrod's Radio Tower, where he found out that it belonged to Whitney and DJ Mary. Smea-Smea appeared again along with Mary while Whitney was battling against Pryce's Suicune ice sculpture. During the final battle against the Masked Man, Smea-Smea was seen mimicking Entei's flames via its Sketch, making it capable of permanently melting the Masked Man's re-freezing ice. In the HeartGold & SoulSilver, Smea-Smea was revealed to have been returned to Whitney.
