The Lake of Rage first appeared in Raise the Red Gyarados, where Silver came to inspect it per Lance's instructions, followed by Gold. The two were soon attacked by a swarm of Gyarados. Based on the static on their Pokégear screens, Silver deduced that a radio wave was behind the lake's Magikarp evolving and the Gyarados rampaging. Eventually, Silver managed to locate the source of the radio waves, a Red Gyarados, and proceeded to caught with Gold's help, stopping the radio waves. However, they were then approached by the Masked Man.
Gold follows Silver to the Lake of Rage. Looking for him, Gold is surprised by a group of Gyarados thrashing around in the water. The locals flee, but Gold spots Silver running towards the lake. Nearly crushed by a glancing attack, Silver tells Gold that there are strange radio waves in the area, forcing the wild Pokémon to evolve. Silver flies off to find the source of the radio waves, leaving Gold alone to deal with multiple angry wild Gyarados by himself.

Interference on their Pokégear reveals the source to be a Red Gyarados in the center of the swarm. Silver captures it, thus stopping the rest from rampaging. But it's only a matter of seconds before the two boys begin arguing again.
In Delibird Delivery - 1 and 2, Gold and Silver battled against the Masked Man, with Silver using his newly caught Red Gyarados to command the lake's other Gyarados to attack him. Despite this, however, both Gold and Silver suffered a crushing defeat.

Suddenly, a fog covers the area. Gold instantly recognizes it as that of the Masked Man. Secretly setting up a ring of razor-sharp icicles around them, the two boys fight alongside each other, before the Mask's taunting gets the better of Silver. Chasing after him alone, Silver calls upon all of the wild Gyarados in the Lake (as the Red Gyarados is the leader of them) and uses their combined strength to attack the Mask.
In Raising Raichu and Do-Si-Do with Dodrio, Lt. Surge arrived at the Lake of Rage to investigate Gold and Silver's disappearance. Using his submarine, he dived into the lake and found the Red Gyarados frozen in ice, as well as some of Gold and Silver's belongings.

Meanwhile, Gold is busy dealing with some of the Mask's Pokémon by himself. After cleverly defeating them, he hurries after Silver, only to find the entire lake frozen solid. Silver and his Gyarados are knocked out. Gold runs to him, only to see a giant chunk of ice smash into Silver, throwing him into the water. Claiming that Silver was being punished, the Mask then attacks Gold as well. The last few panels show Gold and his Aipom the instant before a giant chunk of ice is about to hit them, and the impact. Gold's hat and goggles are seen tossed into the air.

Many weeks later, Lt. Surge returns to the battle site to find the Red Gyarados frozen in the lake, and managed to procure both the boys' belongings and the Gyarados itself when it knocks itself out trying to smash open a mass of ice containing Gold and Silver's baggage.
