They learned they were robots when they were trying to escape them. A roller coaster car they were riding in crashed through a robotic {{p|Zapdos}}, sending metal flying everywhere. In the [[Pokémon Pocket Monsters]] manga, a similar attraction to Pokémon Land known as the Amusement Park was built by [[Giovanni]]. {{OBP|Red|Pocket Monsters}}, {{TP|Red|Clefairy}} and {{TP|Red|Pikachu|Pikachu (Pocket Monsters)}} visited the Amusement Park. Giovanni was not happy to see them in the place he built. He sent out {{p|Machamp}} and {{p|Poliwhirl}}, which evolved into {{p|Poliwrath}}, to take care of them.
