Leveling up

The Trainer level (Japanese: トレーナーレベル Trainer level) is a property of the player in Pokémon GO. The player's Trainer level is increased by earning experience (abbreviated XP). Leveling up earns the player items, and certain levels unlock particular items. Once unlocked, items can appear when searching PokéStops.

After reaching level 5, the player can choose a team, which allows them to use Gyms.

Earning experience

The player can earn experience in the following ways:

A Pokémon ran away while catching it 25

Bonus: New Pokémon 500
Bonus: "Bonus" (catch the 100th of a species) 100
Bonus: First catch of the day 500
Bonus: Streak bonus (seventh day in a row catching a Pokémon) 2000

Bonus: Great throw 50
Bonus: Excellent throw 100

Evolving and hatching
Evolve a Pokémon 500
Hatch a 2 km Egg 200

Defeat a Pokémon in a Gym belonging to another team 100 each
Bonus: Defeat all Pokémon in a Gym belonging to another team 50

Before Gyms were changed on June 20, 2017, players could also earn experience by training at a Gym controlled by their team. Defeating any one Pokémon would earn experience equal to 1/10 of the Prestige added to the Gym, while defeating all of the Gym's Pokémon would earn 12 XP.
