The '''Dragon type''' (Japanese: '''ドラゴンタイプ''' ''Dragon type'') is one of the eighteen [[type]]s. Notable Trainers who specialize in Dragon-type Pokémon are [[Lance]], the current {{pkmn|Champion}} of the [[Indigo Plateau]], [[Clair]] of [[Blackthorn City]], [[Drake]] of the [[Hoenn]] [[Elite Four]], [[Drayden]] of [[Opelucid City]], [[Iris]], the current Champion of the [[Unova]], and [[Drasna]] of the [[Kalos]] Elite Four. Prior to [[Generation IV#Advances in gameplay|changes in Generation IV]], all Dragon-type moves were [[special move|special]], but they may now also be [[physical move|physical]] depending on the attack.

Defensively, Dragon types have resistances to {{t|Electric}}, {{t|Grass}}, {{t|Water}} and {{t|Fire}}. However, many fully-[[evolution|evolved]] Dragon-type Pokémon have a double weakness to {{type|Ice}} moves, due to their secondary [[type]]s. Dragon is the only type resistant to all types of [[starter Pokémon]], including Electric. Their weakness to themselves and {{t|Fairy}} is balanced by the fact that few Pokémon can learn powerful Fairy-type moves in the first place.

The Dragon type is statistically the best type overall, as many of them are [[pseudo-legendary Pokémon|pseudo-legendary]] or [[Legendary Pokémon]] with above 600 base stat total. Most Dragon-type Pokémon have high {{stat|Attack}} and {{stat|Special Attack}}, as well as potentially high {{stat|Speed}}. Even though Dragon-type moves are only {{DL|Damage modification|super effective}} against Dragon-type Pokémon, the only two types that resist Dragon are {{t|Steel}} and {{t|Fairy}}, with Fairy types being completely immune to Dragon attacks. This gives Dragon-type Pokémon good use of their benefited [[same-type attack bonus]]. However, because of Dragon-type Pokémon's secondary type and their wide and varied movepool, they still have some ability to counter Fairy types, Steel types, and {{t|Ice}} types.

Despite Dragon's numerous offensive advantages, Dragon type moves tend to be somewhat weak in the hands of non-Dragon types, due to not benefiting from STAB and only being super effective against a single type, and so tend to get passed up on these Pokémon in favor of other moves unless no better coverage options are available. However, because the type provides good neutral coverage, as well as some Dragons not being weak to {{t|Ice}} and/or {{t|Fairy}}, they can remain viable options in certain situations and roles.

===Interacting with Dragon-type===

Users of {{a|Color Change}} will be changed into Dragon-type after it is hit with a Dragon-type move. {{a|Protean}} will change its user into Dragon-type when it uses a Dragon-type move. When a Pokémon with {{a|Multitype}} holds a [[Draco Plate]], it will become a Dragon-type Pokémon. When a Pokémon with {{a|Imposter}} is sent out and its opposite opponent is Dragon-type, it will transform into that Pokémon and turn into a Dragon-type.
