Golduck first made his appearance in ''[[PS018|A Tale of Ninetales]]'', where an accident caused {{adv|Red}} and {{adv|Blue}} to switch [[Party|parties]], with Golduck ending up with Red. During his stay on Red's team, he, along with the rest of Blue's party, experienced Red's positive style of training, as opposed to Blue's fiercer one. When the Pokémon were returned to their respective Trainers, Blue's Pokémon ended up friendlier to Blue as a result of this type of training.

Golduck later appeared during the battle against [[Team Rocket]], where it used its psychic powers to locate the {{p|Mr. Mime|Pokémon}} who was responsible for setting up a barrier around [[Saffron City]], preventing access to the city. Using this information, Red and [[Pika]] defeated the Pokémon, turning the barriers off.

In this chapter, Golduck was mainly used to transport {{adv|Blue}} across water. He was later used in battle against [[Agatha]], and was able to defeat her Arbok. As seen in a flashback, it was used in a battle against the same [[Elite Four]] member two years prior, where it channeled Blue's thoughts to his Pokédex while he was trap in a {{m|Dream Eater}} and had to distract her {{p|Gengar}}. It also showcased the ability to make a barricade of water using its {{m|Hydro Pump}} attack, which was used earlier to capture a {{p|Lapras}}.

Golduck was used during {{adv|Blue}}'s battle with {{adv|Red}} in order to learn the ultimate moves from [[Kimberly]]. During the battle, it caused heavy damage to [[Gyara]], but was defeated by {{adv|Lax}} when it used {{m|Earthquake}} while Golduck was {{m|dig}}ging. Golduck was later used against the [[Trainer Tower]] A.I., known as "R", but was knocked back and was unable to attack.
