Masamune is based on the real-life {{wp|Date Masamune}} of Japanese history. {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Yoshi}} was his mother and {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Iroha}} was his daughter. {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Kagetsuna}}, {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Tsunamoto}}, and {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Shigezane}} were three of his most faithful retainers, the latter also his cousin. {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Munetoki}} and {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Tsunenaga}} were also retainers. {{DL|List of Pokémon Conquest characters|Munezane}} served both Masamune's father ({{wp|Date Terumune}}, who is not in the game) and Shigezane.
