Steven Stone (Japanese: ツワブキ ダイゴ Daigo Tsuwabuki) is the Elite Champion in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, and a powerful wandering Trainer in Emerald, having relegated his title to Wallace. He is a master of the Template:Type2, with a Metagross being the cornerstone of his team.

Steven is the son of the president of the Devon Corporation, and he and his father both collect rare stones. Steven makes his home on Mossdeep, and when the Elite Four are beaten in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he will have left a Beldum and a note for the player.

In the games

His strategy in battle is to use Template:Type2 Pokémon to find the opponent's weakness.

Steven is the Champion in Ruby and Sapphire. In Emerald, Wallace replaces him in this role.

In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, after Steven is defeated, he offers a Beldum at his house at Mossdeep.

In Pokémon Emerald, Steven is a powerful wandering trainer who gave up competing seriously to spend more time looking for rare rocks and stones. He claims to be willing to climb waterfalls to find rare stones. With this hint, he can be found and challenged in the upper area of Meteor Falls after defeating the Elite Four.

He also appears in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The player will first meet him after they have left the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City after collecting the Copycat's Clefairy Doll, in which he will appear and inform the player that there's reports of either a blue or red Pokémon roaming Kanto. The next time the player will meet him after beating Red on Mt. Silver, where he will appear in the Silph Co. building in Saffron City and let the player choose one of the Hoenn starter Pokémon. He can afterwards be found in the Pewter Museum of Science, offering to trade a Beldum for a Forretress.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Steven first appears after the player exits the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City informing the player of a Pokémon roaming Kanto - Latias in HeartGold or Latios in SoulSilver. After returning Copycat's lost Pokémon doll and defeating Red, the player may receive one of the Hoenn starters from him at Silph Co. in Saffron City. Steven will then appear at the Pewter Museum of Science and after speaking with him, he will again appear at Silph Co. Speaking to him there will then cause him to make an offer to trade his Beldum for a Forretress.

In the anime

Steven's only appearance in the Pokémon anime was in A Hole Lotta Trouble. He helped Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket escape from an underground cavern.

At the end of the episode, Ash vowed to train harder so one day he could be powerful enough to battle Steven.

Steven and his Metagross in Pokémon Adventures

Steven met Ruby while looking through the Granite Cave. During a battle with wild Mawile, Ruby's Skitty bumped into one of Steven's Moon Stones, causing it to evolve.

Steven was well-aware of the danger Team Magma and Team Aqua presented, and extended an invitation to Ruby to join the fight against them. Steven invited him to help, but Ruby declined because he didn't like battling. The armlets on Steven's arms are devices he can chip away stone with, to grab and retrieve rocks he sees that are out of reach.

Later in the series, Steven confessed that he and his father, the owner of the Devon Corporation, knew about the schemes of Team Magma and Team Aqua quite long ago. Mr. Stone built the Submarine Explorer 1 so that Steven can seal the Seafloor Cavern and no one would be able to wake Kyogre and Groudon. The backup plan in case it fails would be to unseal Regirock, Regice, and Registeel.

Steven later assembles the rest of the Hoenn Elite Four in order to fight against Kyogre and Groudon. With the help of Sapphire's Wailord and Relicanth, Steven and the Elite Four unsealed the Regis. Steven took control of Registeel and gave the other two Regis to the other members of the Elite Four.

Knowing he would die in Kyogre and Groudon's battle, Steven stepped down from the position of Champion, and gave it back to Wallace, who was actually the true Champion while Steven had only been a runner-up. After Kyogre and Groudon returned to their respective domains, Steven apparently died from the strain of controlling the Regis, but was later revived under mysterious circumstances when Ruby released his Celebi.

Steven later traveled to Sinnoh to collect the rare stones found in the region. He had purchased a Villa but sold it to Platinum and returned to Hoenn at the start of the Platinum arc.

Steven uses his Metagross to fly around Hoenn. Its magnetism allows him to float atop it.

Trivia

• In Pokémon Emerald, when the player speaks to him in Meteor Falls before their battle, he makes an error. He talks of their encounter in the Sootopolis City Space Center. The Space Center is actually in Mossdeep City, and this dialog may result from the encounter the player has with him in Sootopolis in Ruby and Sapphire.
• Also, the battle with Steven against Maxie and Tabitha is the only occasion in the Generation III games where the player teams up with an ally for a double battle. Several others are available in the Battle Frontier and multiple times in Generation IV.
  • During this tag battle, by hacking the game, it is possible to level up Steven's Pokémon (this would not happen normally, as not enough experience is given to do so).
• In the anime, Steven is the Champion with the least amount of screen time (counting Gary as Blue), appearing in one episode, while everyone else has appeared more than once. He is also the only Champion not to play a significant role in the anime.
• In Pokémon Platinum, the person who gives the player their villa in the Resort Area mentions that the guy who gave him the villa came to Sinnoh to collect rare stones. After collecting the stones, he left the region with all the items in the villa. This mysterious previous owner may in fact be Steven, who himself sold the villa to Platinum in Pokémon Adventures and subsequently appeared in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
  • Interestingly, the Beldum that he trades is holding a Dawn Stone, which has not appeared in Hoenn but has in Sinnoh, meaning that this could be one of the rare stones he sought.
• He is the only champion with no Water-type Pokémon. Ironically, he is replaced in Pokémon Emerald by Wallace who uses only Water-type Pokémon.
• Despite taking place three years after the Generation III games, Steven introduces himself in HeartGold and SoulSilver as the Hoenn Champion, without implying that he had ever lost the title.
  • It is possible that he retained his title because he only lost to May/Brendan after he had already vacated his spot. Red is also referred to as the Kanto Champion despite not actively holding the title.
• In the anime, Steven is portrayed as having blue-green eyes, however, in Pokemon Adventures he is portrayed as having yellow eyes.
• In the anime, the games, the Japanese version of Pokemon Adventures and the back cover of the English Version of Pokémon Adventures volume 21, Steven's hair sticks out on the right, but in the English version of Pokemon Adventures his hair sticks out on the left.
  • This is because the artwork for the English version is printed in reverse of the Japanese Version.
