Certain special Move Tutor moves are distinguishable from other Move Tutor moves through several criteria. All special Move Tutor moves meet the following criteria, and no other Move Tutor moves meet any of these criteria:

  • Special Move Tutor moves are exclusive to a single Pokémon or a certain explicitly defined class of Pokémon.
  • Special Move Tutor moves cannot be taught to Mew.
  • Special Move Tutor moves can be taught in every core series game, starting either from Generation IV or from the first time the move was available as a Move Tutor move.

Additionally, special Move Tutor moves can always be taught for free, not requiring shards, BP, or any other form of payment. Some other Move Tutor moves are available for free in some games, but special Move Tutor moves are the only ones available for free in every game since their debut.

Like all Move Tutor moves, special Move Tutor moves can be taught only once in Generation III and an unlimited number of times from Generation IV onward.

Variations of Hyper Beam

Introduced in Generation III, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, and Hydro Cannon can only be taught to fully-evolved Grass-type, Fire-type, and Water-type first partner Pokémon, respectively, if their friendship is maximized.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, these moves could only be taught to Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, respectively, and could only be taught once. In later games, they can be taught multiple times and to any fully-evolved first partner Pokémon.
