Terrain is a mechanic in the Pokémon series that has existed since first generation. Depending on what location a battle is started in, the terrain seen in battle will look different. While this is often simply aesthetical, there are some mechanics that can affect or change based on the terrain.

Types of terrain

Grass

Main article: Tall grass

Grass is the most common type of terrain, triggered when encountering a Pokémon in tall or long grass, or battling another trainer is a grassy area, which most of the regions in the Pokémon region have several of.

Grass can also be triggered in non-grassy areas by use of Grassy Terrain. However, grass created by this move has an additional effect: all grounded Pokémon gain 1/16th of their maximum HP at the end of each turn, Grass-type moves are powered up, and Earthquake, Bulldoze, and Magnitude are all weakened.
