The Pokemon Sword & Shield prototypes are early builds of the games Pokemon Sword & Shield, which predate the game's release by a period of nearly two years. Three builds were anonymously posted online in October of 2020, with each having different build dates from various periods of development. Each build features many debug menus, and a cursor which allows these debug menus to be interacted with.

  • Build 30 (git commit hash of 51790cbcaaa69d65863ade5ba588fcd5109b4ed2) created on December 22nd, 2017
  • Build 264 (git commit hash of 30f225a1cb089f9b2e2f93b596e7b66a9dca8bf8) created on March 26th, 2018
  • Build 562 (git commit hash of 51790cbcaaa69d65863ade5ba588fcd5109b4ed2) created on May 25th, 2018

Most of build 30 is in Japanese, with each debug menu having occasional English text. When in the field section of the build, the player can hold the L button to run faster and disable object collision.

Gameplay

Postwick

By selecting field on the initial debug menu, the player is immediately dropped into gameplay outside of their house in Postwick, which features several notable changes when compared to the final.

  • A garage attached to the far left of the house can be seen, but was removed from the final.
    • This garage can be seen in various concept art for the game.[1]
  • The camera angle is more static, and doesn't zoom in as the player approaches the house.
  • Two Budew near the flowerbed are missing.
    • Although these Budew also isn't present during the intro sequence to the final game, when Hop approaches your house.
  • The arrangement of potted plants on the ground in build 30 is different when compared to the final, which are far more spread out.

Build 30 Final

The player's house is noticably unfinished, and lacks any NPCs to interact with.

Final

The player's room is much the same as the rest of the house, but has a partially modelled Nintendo Switch console, which appears different in the final game. It also does not have the feature of detecting which color of Joy Cons the player is using.

Reason: Can this be found by walking through walls in the final?

A room that cannot be accessed in the final game can be found when disabling object collision, behind the locked door in the entryway.

Title Screen & UI

The title screen features an early design for the game's logo, which lacks a Shield counterpart. Since the game is largely unfinished, the title screen will not change after defeating the Champion, as the Gym Challenge doesn't exist in this build.

Music

The title screen uses an early version of the Gym theme with a significantly shorter loop than what can be heard in the final game, with a notable audience cheering sound effect overlaid onto the file.

  • After waiting a certain amount of time on the title screen, the audio will only begin playing in the left audio channel.

  • Postwick's music, is different, note that it plays throughout the entire build
  • No idle animation for player
  • No opening door animation
